Yep. Every year Fran trots out the most un-athletic team full of pasty white dudes and you think there is no way this is a tournament team. Yet every year he gets them there. And they will be amped for this like always. Fran has this game circled every year like how McCarney had for our football team back in the day when trying to make inroads.
I got dinged for saying that Iowa game will be tough the other night. I'll be pleasantly surprised if ISU wins it.
Iowa looks to be the same team they've been for the last 10 years. Probably an 8-12 seed in the tournament. They're bad defensively but they're dangerous because they can ratchet up the defense for one game if they really want to, it's just not sustainable.
Don't forget the unimposing white dude off their bench who is about to go 7/9 from three against us and then disappear for the rest of the season (or heck, the rest of his basketball career).
They've always got one or two of those.
Pffft, I'll take the Clones in Hilton 7 days a week. Get some backbone you cowards.
Freeman actually looks pretty good for a true freshman (I think?) and they've looked most formidable when he and Krikke are both on the floor.
Cyclones should win at home, but I don't think it will be easy.

I'm guessing we just hammered some odd margin of victory button in there to get that high, but I'll take it. I'm guessing that we'll drop through the non-conference, but should be in a nice enough place starting conference season that we'll be set up nicely assuming that we take care of business there.

Iowa has been doing it for years now. The NET loves teams that destroy inferior competition. Of course this is probably a good time to remember that the actual NET ranking doesn't mean much, its your resume that counts and ISU doesn't have a quad 1 or 2 win yet. Hopefully we get one on Thursday.
I'm curious whether the recent (last 2 games) pace is intentional or just a factor of the opponents. The pace the last two games have been over 75 possessions. There were ZERO games with a > 75 pace last year, the only ones under Otz were a couple of scrubs and the Memphis game in the non-conf tourney that year.
It could just be a fluke, but it seemed to me against DePaul that there was a concerted effort to push the pace on both ends. I think it would be a good adjustment to this years team to back off the "grinding" style and pick up the pace. With it I think there should be more of a focus on forcing turnovers earlier in the shot clock - we've been successful in spurts, like just after halftime at DePaul.
The game Thursday could be really fun if we are able to force turnovers and we push the pace.

I posted somewhere else but it definitely looked like Otz was urging the guys to push the ball on the sidelines.
They're still likely going to be a house of cards come March but for one night, it will all come together.
And Fran and his teams' WWE antics are ridiculous but somewhere in there he does do a good job of putting them in a spot to beat enough teams.
Thursday's tactic will be to go after R. Jones and Lipsey to A) get them in early foul trouble and B) get in their head with the WWE stuff.

On the other hand, being an 11 seed could involve some sweating on Selection Sunday.
On the other-other hand, I'm willing to trade Selection Sunday Sweat for a two-weekend tournament run.
We got bogged down pretty bad in the HC in Orlando. Glad TJ recognized that we have to push and try to get some good looks early because we weren’t getting good looks in Orlando via the standard HC offense.
CW and Blum talk about this in the latest 'pod. There's an idea that Otz wants to be Tony Bennett but he really wants to build off the strengths that he has to work with.
This group might be better with running and just better D than Hoiball but not the last two versions of mucking up the game.
Perhaps the half court stuff comes along later with more comfort.
