***Official 2023 Chicago Cubs Thread***

It's crazy that Belli's hit to get the winning run, and the last out of the game were basically the same ball. Hard hit back at the mound with the shortstop already at second to cover the bag. The only difference is that Alzolay was able to get out of the way and Payamps couldn't.

Hell of a series win. Beating Burnes and Woodruff...incredible.

Hopefully this wears off some of the voodoo ******** the Brewers have had going for them, from Truang making ridiculous plays at second to 108 MPH liners being hit right to the third basemen for an easy double play.

Fortunate win. Got 2 runs early against an elite pitcher who quickly found his groove and mowed everyone down. Not just a series win but one against a team above you while also facing their two best pitchers (Burnes and Woodruff).

Defense needs to be better and it would be nice to be hitting more than they have the last few weeks, but you have to like the result. I think everyone would have gladly agreed take a 2-1 series win and run without ever playing a game

Craziest stat I can think of from this series is we only scored 2 runs outside of the 1st inning.

Top of the order was able to do top of the order things to start the game and pitchers were able to hold on.

Man it’s gonna be tough to win the division. After their next series against the Phillies, the Brewers don’t play a single game against a team currently above .500 until the Cubs at the end of the season. Marlins are exactly .500 but they barely count anyway

Even if we win the division we'd still be in the wildcard round. (3 seed) Our best shot to make a deep run is long but getting Stroman back at pre London form makes us match-up well with anybody. To get to the WS you'd have to beat ATL at some point, doesn't really matter when.

Dodgers are actually the best team since the break. Cubs have a better record than the Braves.

Yeah...the last 6 games are wicked for the Cubs. Somehow need to find a way to get 2-3 games up on the division in the next 3 weeks, otherwise it's a wild card

They have a better record but the Braves are going to be the team you have to beat to go to the WS.
Probably fair. I think I’d rather have Kershaw with one game to win, and the Dodgers are super talented top to bottom, but Atlanta probably does have the edge in a long series right now.

Not really related, but is Syndegaard an arm you consider picking up now as a project?

If he’s cool with trying to figure things out in the minors then maybe. But if the Dodgers couldn’t fix him with their voodoo magic ******** I don’t think the Cubs can.

I wouldn't. I think we have better options now and much better options coming. I think we add an ace this year. Stroman takes his option hoping for a better deal in 25. Horton takes Stroman's spot in 25. Guys like Wick and Brown grow into our middle of the rotation guys. Really no reason to take a flyer when have such strong options in house.

Free agency should look something like this.
1. Bellinger
2. Top of the rotation starter
3. Solid lefty reliever

Yeah, it would seem he would have to accept a minor league role…or possibly work out of the bullpen the way Dempster did for a few years. He’s several years older than Dempster was though…might not be worth it.

Surprised with the high level prospects some teams are calling up for September. Wonder what we go with…PCA and Little?

Wouldn’t mind seeing Mervis to be a DH in our righty lineup.

I was really hoping Ohtani was going to be that top of rotation starter…but sad for him/glad for us that we found out now.

Bellinger’s negotiations are going to be tough. You’re dealing with Boras, and he’s going to want to extend for longer than what we will want (and go higher obviously). He’ll obviously point to the numbers as justification (and the whole 5 tool player thing), but you have to at least be a little wary of signing another Heyward. The advanced metrics on Bellinger’s swing just really don’t look good.

Just curious. What do people think is a reasonable deal for Bellinger?

5 yrs @ $150M or
6 yrs @ $170M

As a benchmark, I believe Swanson was 7 yrs @$177M
