I am excited for football season, and would love to be wrong, but I feel like this is a slowly sinking ship. Campbell does not appear to have the culture where it needs to be, and if he doesn't have culture, what does he have? Certainly are not out talenting anyone. We have never been a win in the margins program either, despite that being his credo. This is trending down a very Paul Rhoads type of path IMO.
except we've recruited the best we've ever recruited ever in the history of ever recruiting recruits.

I think you're overreacting A LOT here. Lol
Maybe. I just need to see something positive to change my mind I think. Where I live I am surrounded by Hok. Everyone knows I am a Cyclone fan --friends, coworkers, neighbors, local family members etc. -- in the last 18 or whatever hours since this broke, I have been hounded by questions, comments, and wild accusations and assumptions. I am dying for news to come out of Iowa City that some of the same **** happened there. And I know that it did, but it was the baseball team and nobody cares. I had one friend ask me when does Campbell get fired for this. I asked him what he meant by that and he said he thinks he should be let go since it happened under his watch. I am just sick and tired of it already and know it is only the beginning.

It felt last year like we tried pretty hard to be a pocket passing team who didn't have the OL to pull that off. If Rocco is able to be more Purdy-esque when it comes to escaping pressure and extending plays, that will help our OL play/coaching transition some (as well as open up the playbook a bit). Lot of criticism last season on the crossing pattern throws and horizontal passing...when you have bad protection, those are the kinds of routes you have time to throw to. Longer developing routes didn't stand a chance. If our guy can get out of the pocket and roll, our chances of busting one on a long route go up substantially (and that forces the defense to respect both the rollout and the deeper threats).

Don't worry we got news out of Iowa...Their back up kicker was betting on their games so basically they're in the same situation as us right? I don't see a difference. /s

That's fair and as someone who lives in your area, I get why you're feeling that way but I think you're overthinking things here.. Also Iowa football is caught up in this, it just hasn't been announced and I'm not sure they're on the level of Dekkers, who we already all knew was going down hard for this. They're going to missing 3 starters on defense for a bit of time.

And you can tell those Iowa fans to absolutely **** off.
1. The same thing happened under their program. So should Kirk be fired too?
2. They're just coming off a racial discrimination investigation where they were found guilty and their AD did nothing.

I'm not worried about the culture whatsoever. I think there was a lot going on last year and none of it had to do with sports betting. I'm not even sure any of that occurred last year. This is occurring everywhere, not just in Ames or Iowa City too. Other state's just haven't done a full investigation because they haven't had a need to yet.

I appreciate what you're saying and agree on all fronts. I can counter their BS fine, but it just starts to grate on me after awhile. My phone was blowing up all afternoon and evening and still this morning from these people. Getting it in person at work this morning too, but at least one Hawk fan was using his brain and said he just hopes none of the Iowa players under investigation were betting on Iowa FB games.

As far as the culture is concerned, I think Campbell has an opportunity to salvage it. A zero tolerance policy and removal of all players associated with the investigation would go a long way. You put the team at risk, you are no longer on the team. There is no me in we, you as a player are either with the team or against the team. You signed the handbook which contained education on gambling and the implications, you broke your word. It is a tough place for Campbell to be in, but I hope he does it for the sake of the culture. Guys like Jirehl Brock, Isaiah Lee, DeShawn Hanika, and the offensive lineman whose name is escaping me right now will have to be unfortunate examples.

The way we play, ball security is more important from our QB than arm talent (see Kyle Kempt v Dekkers or Park). We know the defense will be solid. If Becht can be smart with his play, and we see improvement in the line and on special teams, we can still have a good season, with upward trajectory moving forward.

Your problem is you give a **** what others think about a team you like.

Whatever talent Dekkers had, he had zero feel for the game. No pocket awareness, did t know when to scramble or throw the ball away. Kohl is probably the future but Becht can hopefully be a serviceable QB.

I think Rocco will be the starter first game, and continue for a while. This might be good early on, as Iowa usually has trouble with mobile QBs.

That said, eventually he will get dinged up and Kohl will play later in the year. Hopefully he will be ready.

But more important than all of that is the OL and run game. REALLY need those to be good, from the jump...

We threw a lot of swing passes and crossing routes even when protection was solid. Dekkers clearly has great arm talent, but it was also obvious he wasn't good at reading defenses or finding the open man. In the end, it was throw to X.
