Every once in a while, I like to play the hot-take game where everyone posts a somewhat controversial/against the grain opinion of yourself about a topic. In this case, lets play the MCU/Marvel hot-take game. I'll start, and feel free to critique mine or chime in with your own if you want to play.

-I actually had quite a bit of fun watching Morbius (terrible post-credits scene aside), and don't think the movie is as bad as people make it out to be
-Outside of the fun 3 Spider-Man stuff, Spider-Man: Far From Home was just a mediocre movie
-I found Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse to be just decent and nowhere near as good as the first movie. I also found both its visuals and sound to be bad, too flashy, and disorientating.
-I really like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and find it not only to be the best Doctor Strange movie, but also a top-third MCU movie
-I love Iron-Man 2 and think it is a way better movie than people give it credit for
-I found Black Panther: Wakanda Forever to be mediocre at best. They 100% should have recast T'Challa.
-The best we see of the Black Panther character in any movie was him in Captain America: Civil War
-GOTG volume 3 was a pretty boring movie that only got fun and good at the end
-While its quality was a bit all over the board for its full run, Agents of Shield was a fun, pretty good show overall
-I find the overuse of multi-verse and time travel in both the movies and the comics to be lazy story-telling
-Big Hero 6 is one of the greatest Marvel movies of all time
-The Amazing Spider-Man is an underrated great movie with Spider-Man's best action and music score


Random other non-Marvel hot-take: Onward is my all-time favorite Pixar movie

I loved Big Hero 6. The movie had great pacing from the opening scene.

The entire "capture to escape" cave sequence scene in the original Iron Man is probably my favorite in the entire MCU. However, the huge eyeholes on the initial suit piss me off every time. Fire and bullets can easily go into those, and he takes zero precautions to protect them.

Some pretty hot takes here.

I find Morbius fine, but I'm more and more convinced that "fine" doesn't cut it anymore. Ten years ago it would have done great at the box office when that and DVD were the only game in town, but today it's competing against a backlog of great movies and streaming. Imagine Morbius in the style of Netflix Daredevil. It's not just Morbius. Movies like Shazam 2, Flash, Ant-Man Quantumainia are struggling to find audiences.

- Across the Spider verse is great, only thing holding it back is it is only half a movie. Into is great too
- 3 spidies was the whole point of far from home. Very enjoyable.
- Multiverse of madness was a good intro for American Chavez but I didn't like the retread of Wandavision
- Agree with Wakonda forever. Hated Ironheart and ignoring "Don't have a land war in Asia" swapping in sea and Atlantis
- I'm not sure why Quantumania exists except to introduce Kang, but Loki did it better.
- Ultron would have been better with xmen quicksilver

Oh yeah, I forgot one more hot take. Outside of the teeter-totter scene, I've always liked the Ben Affleck Daredevil movie, and Affleck was a great Daredevil.

It was the shortest to date (38 minutes) and actually watched it before work. Some not so secret secrets were revealed, big action sequence (probably a good chunk of the series budget went to that one), and another flashback that fleshed out a bit of Fury's relationship with his wife. All in all, not a bad episode. The ramp up has begun to the conclusion. The only question is how many more people are going to get revealed as Skrulls and what are the implications going forward.

With the actors and writers strike in progress, studios are starting to get creative:
Disney has announced that Ms Marvel series will be coming to ABC in August. The first 3 episodes will air on Saturday, Aug 5 (7-10 PM Central) and the final 3 episodes will air on Saturday, Aug 12. This makes a ton of sense to re-engage fans to see The Marvels in November.

Also, a new The Marvels trailer just dropped today:


It was also announced yesterday that the first 3 episodes of Secret Invasion will drop on Hulu today and will be available on that platform through Aug 17

Another interesting tidbit: Ms Marvel actress Iman Vellani will be a co-writer on the new Ms Marvel comic series, along with Ms Marvel series writer Sabir Pirzada.

I had seen that and found it to be fascinating as well. I've never been a steelbook guy, so that is that, but the no disc is very interesting. Believe it or not, even I am finally giving up too and officially switching to only all digital moving forward. I made the change a few months back, and it still pains me to say that. I got a new TV, which would require another 4K blu ray player and with fewer and fewer company's even making them anymore, I just wasn't impressed with what was left being offered out there, especially for the prices they were asking. I finally caved. I knew the day was coming, but just didn't know when. It is soon to be a thing of the past. With that said, I still buy all the movies still, but now it is only digital copies, whereas I would always buy both previously.

Phsyical media will likely always be around, you can't remove content on a whim from people who have their own physical copies. Selling everything you would traditionally get with physical media WITHOUT the physical media is a fascinating experiment. It also REEKS of a cash grab by Disney, a company who is in a horrible cash crisis right now.

Just finished Secret Invasion. The finale episode is pretty formulaic, but I was still very entertained. I was kind of underwhelmed the first 3 episodes, but the finale was a highpoint. The special effects in this episode are some of the best of the Disney+ MCU series.

I don't want to spoil too much, but I will say I'm super surprised with how the series ends: it's surprisingly dark and may change the tone for the Disney+ series moving forward. I could see a Season 2 or at least hear cursory updates regarding the skrulls in future series and the greater MCU.

I certainly did not see that speech by the president coming. That felt like such a hard right turn that is going to make things a bit uncomfortable in the MCU landscape going forward. I'm sure that is the writers trying to inject some real world into the show, as it mimics a bit of 9/11 hysteria and other present day attitudes, but still.

And now comes the endless speculation on when certain characters were replaced. Rhodey was in a hospital gown, so are we assuming he got replaced right around Civil War? If so, that completely ***** on the emotional scene of Tony's death. Did any injuries he suffered during the Endgame battle require hospitalization and they get him there? And replacing Ross makes almost no sense unless this show occurs prior to BP2. He was literally on the run from the US government after escaping custody.

Overall, I felt a bit let down by the series and even if they do a season 2, I don't think an upper-70s Samuel L. Jackson should be the focus of it. Fury with a walker just doesn't sound like fun.

I think a S2 would be based around Olivia Coleman and Emilia Clarke - there's a lot that could be done and those actresses could carry another 6-episode series, or maybe a 90-minute Disney+ "event"

2nd half of Ms marvel, last part of Secret Invasion, and pretty much all of She-Hulk soured me. I still have some hope for some of their projects but it’s gonna take something smartly written to excite me again.

Disney got greedy with the MCU and over saturated the market with it. I get their thought that people were at an all time high with Infinity War and Endgame so pump out more content, but you needed to let folks breathe a bit after that.

I liken it a bit to the UFC, which was bananas for like a decade straight but then Dana White was like, “Hey let’s have a Fight Night every week as well as sometimes a couple of PPVs within 30 days of each other!” Too much of something doesn’t make it special anymore. Another reason why football is so popular is you know it’s only a handful of games your team is playing each season.

Marvel needs to go back to spacing things out, working on telling great and connected stories and most of all get the right characters and actors to tell those stories.
