It’s funny, anytime a P12 fan brings up academics/research funding when talking about realignment. It’s like “oh sweetie. Bless your heart.”
I'm old enough to remember the ups and down's of the original Realignment Mega Thread.
We too were naive at the time and expected immediate moves only to learn it takes years and at least 1000 pages of mindless speculation before a real domino drops. Rookies.
He’s not staying more than three years no matter what happens. If he’s successful he’s just going to jump to another job or to the NFL. If he’s not he will still leave for a program that cares about sports.
I am not too concerned about Utah to the Big12. Unless the Big12 has some agreement with BYU they are a definite take for the Big12. Solid athletic teams and rabid fan base. ESPN & FOX would love to have a top 15 football program in their portfolio.
Fans will be fans. And Presidents and AD's are going to publicly commit to Pac10 because that helps Pac10 get the best TV deal.
Utah and ASU hope if the Big10 adds 4 more schools- they are right behind Oregon & Washington. So I wouldn't expect President and AD to speak about Big12.
Agree that Pac12 schools don't grasp that media rights value is based views and brands. The TV folks don't care about academics.
I think with Pac12 schools they feel they are Big10's left hand. Rose Bowl relationship, all this AAU talk, the grand Alliance, etc.
I don't blame Pac12 schools for projecting strength and having Big10 or SEC aspirations. If Iowa State were in the same position, I would hope Wendy and Jamie would aim high. Especially if they feel their fall-back option will be there if they wait.
Everything's a negotiation. ESPN has a pro-rata, but FOX doesn't. So even if the Big12 adds the 4 corner schools, Yormark is going to be at the negotiating table with FOX and lesser degree ESPN.
If the Big12 wants to add Gonzaga, UConn, etc. Yormark will be at the negotiating table. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if he hasn't already had those negotiations. Aka ESPN/FOX would pay $10M for Gonzaga, Villanova, Creighton, etc.
The timing is good because the Big East TV deal with FOX expires in the next couple years. So a good time to see if FOX would have interest in adding Big East schools to Big12. Or if they prefer keeping the Big East brand going.
Only problem with this theory.....when we added the new 4, ESPN and Fox agreed to give exactly 0$ more. So the irate 8 agreed to take a pay cut to give them a share until the new contract.
I would assume they are having these discussions but if their is no pro rata qualification, the Media partners have no obligation to give more, just like in the current deal with UCF, UC, UH, and BYU.
Espn didn’t have a pro rata clause when we added them. The new contract has one, but only for P5 schools. It’s a short term “cut”, that OuuT’s buyout will cover. The new four are also coming for a reduced rate for that short term, which is still more than they make now. And a lot more for them when the new contract starts.
My guess if FOX doesn't offer more for the additional inventory from the 4 corner schools, the Big 12 can seek a 3rd partner like Amazon, CBS, CW, etc.
But every media person I have read says FOX is on board to match ESPN's pro-rata. That makes sense- keeps a 3rd media partner out of Big12 and FOX seems to value college basketball inventory.
This is about the addition of BB schools, like Gonzaga, as I was discussing, not adding P5 schools.
Adding P5s is fine, but what I have been discussing is the talk about adding BB schools. They are not part of any Pro Rata clause, so they would be just like the 4 new schools we added in the current contract, no pro rata.
So unless the B12 somehow negotiates an additional payment from the Media partners, which have no obligation to add money, adding teams like Gonzaga, Villanova etc would just reduce the share, just like the 4 adds did currently for the Irate 8, just as I said.
I know there was no pro rata clause in current deal....just like a team like Gonzaga wont trigger the pro rata in the new contract.
Hence my point that I dont think adding BB only schools is a good idea, at the present time. Until we get closer to another contract in 6-8 years to negotiate for BB only schools as part of that contract. Otherwise BB only schools will just reduce the share.
Obviously the Big12 isn’t going to add BB only schools if the media partners aren’t on board with paying for it.
The Big12 WILL NOT add basketball only schools if ESPN/FOX don't add incremental money that not only pays those basketball only schools, keeps the current 12, 14 or 16 whole AND contributes a vig for the Big12 Conference.
Dodd also saying the Big 12 ADs expect over $50 million with bowl, playoff, NCAA tournament money thrown in.

What Utah fans think doesn’t mean a thing. Once they’ve been through this crap a couple times for weeks each time they might start to learn how this works.
Dennis Dodd was on the Big 12 radio show this morning, and he said that the B12 would receive more money if they break up the football and basketball contracts in the future, when the two are combined per school.
He thought that was the plan, that this current contract will end in 5/6 years and then the conference will be able to sell both as separate bids and get more than if they sold them together. That is why adding teams like Gonzaga would make sense if you were selling that portion of the TV contract.
Of course it will be, you can do the math from our current rate to the new rate, and get the mid 50s. When you add the new money for the 12 team championship, it will be even more.
Our current contract brings in mid 40s, when everything is added up, and the new deal brings in approx 10M more per year, not including other increases.

Exactly.... my point is adding BB only schools in the future (5/6 years) could add more money, if we split up the BB and FB contracts. But without that provision in the current contract, they probably wont, and without some concessions from the Media partners, they will just reduce our share, until we can negotiate them separately in the future.
Which is why adding them now doesnt make sense, to me. Adding them in 5-6 years when we can renegotiate them in a BB separate deal, does.
