I was just going to say that. We've had so few opportunities to hear from him. Listening to him now, just reaffirms my belief that he will be a great coach for ISU.
 
Great news and Bray sounds like a good one (high school Gatorade player of the year should impress high level recruits) and he's had a lot of success as a coach. Maybe he can bring in some of those Pensylvania and Ohio studs that want to play in the best conference in the country.

I just remember watching the Little League World Series one time and, as Dante Bichette's team was dominating my former Little League, they mentioned in passing that kids down south are encouraged to pick one sport and work on that year round. Maybe that's not the case everywhere, but for instance, are you telling me that kids in Texas that play football are encouraged to play sports other than football, especially those that they deem are destined to be "studs"?
 
Looking at the conference recruiting rankings, here is a breakdown of how many 5-star players each BCS conference inked:

SEC - 15 (LSU 5, Bama 4, UF 3)
Big 12 - 5 (UT 3)
Pac 10 - 5 (USC 4)
ACC - 5 (FSU 2, UM 2)
Big 10 - 3 (OSU 2)
Big East - 0

One argument is that there are not a lot of large schools in Iowa. Usually the larger schools have more kids to choose from in sports. Look at some of the largest schools in Iowa. Valley has a lot more kids than Hoover and has more of a budget for the athletic department. There are very few large metro areas in Iowa which means most of the Iowa High Schools are small town 1A and 2A schools as opposed to Texas 6A schools.

Football in the south (Texas, Florida, Bama...) is just a completely different animal that Iowa football. I think a lot of it has ot do with tradition and the atmosphere surrounding football. Even small schools have very good football teams. Every kid goes out for football as opposed to Iowa, where Des Moines teams with more kids barely field an entire team. Southern HS athletic budgets are higher, with more donors, due to tradition.

I can only imagine if there was a high school in Iowa which approached football like a big Texas High School does.

I think many Iowa HS players, if born and raised in Texas, could be 4 stars with the development that the Texas programs provide.

There are football hotbeds in Iowa, but you're right population has more to do with it than anything.

I think in Texas there may be some guys that are strictly football players, but I really don't see that as the case near as much in Florida, maybe that has changed in the last 10 years or so though. The only sport that I can think of that really had specialized guys was basketball. Of course you will have guys that do only play one sport, but alot of times that is determined by their skillset and personaly choice, not being pressured from coaches...

Fair enough. I guess what happens in Texas doesn't necessarily categorize the entire South...

Why we waited until signing day to announce Bray is the million dollar question. I don't know if he could have helped us land Mars or Marry, but he sure couldn't have hurt.

Why would announcing the DL coach help us land two linebackers?

Alot of states down south also have competitive weightlifting as a high school sport. This gives the football coaches another excuse to work with the players during the winter and (competing with basketball and soccer) and get alot of quality weight work in...
