Watson

Am I the only one that thinks people are overstating how skinny or slight-framed Watson is? He’s 6-6 215. Ejim was listed at only 5 pounds more and I don’t think anyone categorized as really slim.
Yeah he's plenty big. I'm sure he will add a little bit of strength over the years but he doesn't need to add a bunch of weight

Ejim would have been perfect for this year's team, crazy how little effort was put toward doing the dirty work under Hoiberg, it was pure let's out talent other teams. While it was fun it's not what people from Iowa appreciate the most. We love the hard working, scrappy teams that overachieve. It was smart of Hoiberg to leave when he did because as we've seen what he does doesn't work long term.

I mean it worked pretty well for Johnny and Fred was much better in conference although during Johnny's tenure ISU was much more the underdog role.

Hogue was another one that did the little things/dirty work and there were several others.
Now, leaning on the offense vs. sustainable defense was probably what kept it from being better.

Hopefully what ISU has going now only grows to be a very good program over the years.

When he was at ISU I often dwelt on his shortcomings(e.g. failed on a dunk attempt against Notre Dame). As time has passed I have come to appreciate his relentless effort and how it formed the back bone of the Hoiberg years.

He was a second team all american and Big 12 player of the year as a senior, hopefully he can be remembered for more than his growing pains as a freshman…

Car and Walker were PG/wing types. Watson is more of a post/wing. Can see him getting stronger and being more of a force down low, but still be able to work on the wing and hit 3's.
Carr was a bit of a reach, I'll admit, but after going back, I'm not sure we've really ever had a player extremely comparable. Brought up Walker because physically they're very similar. About the same height, thin and long. Prohm tried to shoe horn him into being a PG, but last year with TJ he played primarily on the wing and small ball 4. Watson has basically been playing that role just earned his minutes right away and didn't have to wait til halfway thru conference play to get minutes.

I think if he continues to progress, the Ejim and Hogue comparisons could come to fruition, but he is pretty far away from even freshman Ejim, simply due to what the team needed Ejim to be that season. Hogue obviously came in as a juco so was a bit more polished off the bat.

Of all possible returning seniors, I'm least worried about grill. I believe he's already stated he wants to get his masters. BRE and Ward would be the 2 to wonder about. I'd think Ward would be least likely to return, but who knows.
Hard to say on Ward. I could understand him not returning, based on kind of being buried in the rotation this year, but if he sticks with it and follows the BRE blueprint, he will be involved next year and have a leg up on whoever else we bring in during the portal season. He has also transferred once already, so he'd have a tough time transferring again and playing right away

Blum and CW hit on how he's been slow-rolled into things very well by the staff. It's the 'give him good experience without overwhelming him' deal which is pretty great imo.

Hopefully his role continues to grow with all others and this season only gets more fun.

Why are we giving up on Ward? He has talent, but the late arrival from visa issues was a set back. Even the freshmen were here over the summer.
Who's giving up on him? I haven't seen that. I definitely want him to stay. Its just in this world of transfers, we're wondering if he sees himself being a bigger contributor next season. I hope he does.

Pretty sure I watched a game over the weekend where a guy was 6-4, 160. Watson is definitely not slight

I'm no snitch, do your own research.

IIRC Watson was a guy who put on like 15-20 lbs over the summer. Showed up at 197 and is now playing at 215 lbs. He's also the youngest player on the team - just turned 19 years old. He has the potential to explode in the next couple years when he settles in and gets more comfortable on the offensive end.

Let him be comfortable at ISU

I don’t think he can play at another D1 team next year
Kids can transfer 2x without sitting out:
- once as undergrad.
- once as grad transfer.

However, there was an article on ESPN about WBB player who transferred from Kentucky to Baylor. She had previously transfered from Utah(?). Sounded like if UK signed a document, she could have been immediately eligible at Baylor. UK refused to sign.

That nearly happened with Caleb grill from unlv

I love what Ward brings. He is the perfect player if we are behind and needing steals with the press
Ward has so much potential. He has great motor and Uber athletic. IMO an off-season getting stronger and working on his offense and he could be a different player next year. Just look how much Rob Jones improved.

It's not like he needs to be a go-to scorer. Give TJ 20-25mpg and be an 8-10ppg & rpg type player.
