Watson

I don't think Watson was "the guy" on his Totino-Grace HS basketball team. He had zero points in the State Championship game vs DeLasalle and only nineteen points in the whole state tournament. I believe he was their defensive stopper, which makes his scoring this year "icing on the cake". Like you guys, I love the kid...
Wow zero points in the championship game? That’s kind of insane.

Watson definitely flying under the radar with stats, but I don’t recall a lot of times this year thinking “oh, that’s a freshman mistake”. Seems to know his role and embraces it.

Athleticism is better than I expected as you never know watching HS highlights how that is going to translate to Big 12.

Excited to see how he develops and agree with others here that he could turn out to be a realy nice player for us.

As someone else posted above, people inside the program do believe he has the biggest upside of this year’s freshman class and NBA potential.

Because that's kind of who he reminds me of. That's why.
Physical comparison checks out. But Melvin was a much higher usage guy on a bad, bad team his freshman year. The numbers make it a difficult comp still in my opinion. Best comp I'm finding, going back as far as I can personally remember, would be freshman Tasheed Carr, who was much more of a true 2, than he was a 3/ small ball 4 like Watson is

Edit: I can't believe I missed this obvious player comp. He is a more efficient version of Jaden Walker. Very similar in physical comp as well.

Give him a couple years and I think he could have the potential NBA comp as a Scottie Barnes (lite) of the Raptors.

For a guy who has hardly shot at all this year to make those shots in a place like that takes alot of balls. Also, I remember when I saw haliburton walk right in front of me on a visit and I said that kid is way too skinny he won't make it at this level lol.

Williams injury was a bummer but if he's healthy I don't think Lipsey grows as much as a player as he has having to be the starting PG.
was Williams only a 'pg' at Temple? I mean, Lipsey at the pg, and Williams as the '2' will work next season, correct?

Watson seems like the type who could have a huge jump from his freshman to Soph season with more confidence and reps. If Im remembering correctly prior to the season Chris did a podcast with JR Blount and JR was gushing over Watson. Said he will be an NBA player and his defense at that early stage in his career was incredible. His wingspan is crazy. I wouldn't be shocked if he is the starting "3" next year and Omaha is the "4".
Omaha is known for his defensive ability/versatility. I think he would guard a 3 more easily, or is Watson just as good guarding most positions?

Watson has crazy bounce and is so athletic! It’s really nice to have good size at all the positions and good bench depth. A lot of these guys are getting better every game and that is a outcome of engaged coaching. Fun to watch this team and excited for our team in the future!

Our fans are weird about demanding every player gets minutes, but I think you saw something today where TJ can actually get an edge on Self as our team gets more talented. Self doesn't go deep at all, TJ has been making sure Watson gets minutes and today he hit some big shots in addition to the regular hustle. We seem to be getting deeper every week. Barring injury we'll be much deeper than KU at Hilton and that is a great thing. Now imagine it in the next two years with the classes we have coming in that are comparable to a lot of KU's classes.
I haven’t been a depth guy but if you’re going to play the way we play, you have to be able to go to 9 and 10 deep at times. It would be nice to have Williams because I do think those guards get tired and it leads to runs of mistakes like we saw yesterday.

I’m excited about Watson. I don’t think it’s talked about enough what it really says about him that TJ gives him these many minutes as a freshman. And in clutch time on the road. Stats don’t jump off the page, but the staff clearly sees something.

It can force the opponent to go deep too. Both for getting tired and fouls. Not saying I want to play exactly like WVU but when officials are bad WVU’s opponents actually end up with more fouls than WVU yet obviously playing less physically.

Car and Walker were PG/wing types. Watson is more of a post/wing. Can see him getting stronger and being more of a force down low, but still be able to work on the wing and hit 3's.

I think TJ will do all he can to convince Grill to return next year.
Of all possible returning seniors, I'm least worried about grill. I believe he's already stated he wants to get his masters. BRE and Ward would be the 2 to wonder about. I'd think Ward would be least likely to return, but who knows.
