The general take from OP, definitely can't count on Des Moines with anything less than a 3, and a 2 would be ideal.

And correct it too soon to think about it too much, but speculation/projection is fun.

For thought experiment, looking at who's near the top 4/5 lines currently, some of the SEC could gravitate toward Orlando or even Greensboro for some of the slots, freeing TCU/Texas/Houston for Birmingham. Duke and/or UNC almost always gets at least one in Greensboro, but both are below typical levels and who knows, maybe wouldn't even be at 5 seed level (but a LOT of season left and lots of wins available in ACC). As it is now, Virginia gets one of those.

A ton of moving parts. Bottom line I hope ISU just continues to win a lot and if we get high seed with advantageous placement, that's bonus material.

Lets say Auburn is 5 and Texas is 8 and Iowa State is 12. Auburn would get Birmingham, Texas would get Des Moines and Iowa State would get Orlando.

Gotta watch Arkansas too, especially if Nick Smith comes back healthy. Des Moines is their second closest and Birmingham looks like it will be full.

Des Moines is Arkansas closest. Its more than 100 miles closer than Birmingham.

Yup, in that one, Kansas and Texas get Des Moines, Alabama and Houston get Birmingham, Purdue and Xavier get Columbus, Houston and Alabama in Birmingham, Tennessee and Virginia in Greensboro, Gonzaga and KSU in Denver, Arkansas and Miami in Orlando and Uconn and Iowa State in Albany.

Iowa State would have to jump TExas and hope that Arkansas and Kansas State didn't also jump ahead of them.

I think you nailed it, pretty much! I could see swapping site of KSU/Texas.

I went a step further with Matrix order, this would be my best-guess of first-weekend sites for top 4 seeds along with the regional placement.

If we follow straight S-curve, Miami shouldn’t have a more advantageous placement than ISU, but no way they’d get slotted in Albany when Orlando is open. But I tried to “balance” the regions as much as I could, as committee does, although that isn’t exact science and I didn’t spend much time on it.

[1] MIDWEST | Kansas City
Des Moines
1 Kansas
Orlando
4 Arkansas
Denver
3 Gonzaga
Sacramento
2 UCLA

[4] WEST | Las Vegas
Albany
1 UConn
Greensboro
4 Virginia
Des Moines
3 Kansas State
Sacramento
2 Arizona

[2] EAST | New York
Columbus
1 Purdue
Albany
4 Iowa State
Columbus
3 Xavier
Greensboro
2 Tennessee

[3] SOUTH | Louisville
Birmingham
1 Houston
Orlando
4 Miami
Denver
3 Texas
Birmingham
2 Alabama

Curious as to why you say that…
Get away from distractions, away from any additional pressure that comes from playing in front of a “home crowd”.

Also- from a personal standpoint I hate that arena for watching basketball.

Only thing I see is that 2 seed Tennessee would get greensboro while Arkansas ends up in Orlando.

Des Moines -> Kansas City is in play... You have to be silly to not want that.

However, considering KU is heading to a #1 seed. They are getting one of those spots. I'm guessing bracket makers would not want a 4/5 ISU to have that much of a home court advantage, meaning that we have to secure a 2/3 seed for that scenario... We are at least a month of winning away from that even being possible..

Denver would be VERY welcomed as well
Des Moines > Kansas City is only in play if ISU is put in the Midwest Regional. That is unlikely unless we win the B12. Remember that conference teams cannot have a rematch until the Sweet Sixteen (if they have played twice in current season) or Elite Eight (if they have played three times in current season).

Therefore, if ISU is a 4 seed, KC would be out if KU is the 1 seed and we played each other in the B12 tournament. But if ISU is a 3 seed, we could be put in the Midwest.

Location is extremely hard to predict this far in advance.

The price of tickets would be insane, if ISU plays in DSM. (That is concerning since I’ve cheered on the Cyclones at the NCAA Tournament every year we’ve played since 1985: Boise, Tucson, Tallahassee, Atlanta, Minneapolis, Auburn Hills, Charlotte, Louisville, Milwaukee, Chicago, Tulsa, San Antonio, NYC, KC, Denver, and oh yes Worcester.)

Yep, exactly what I said. We need to be a 3 seed or better to get Des Moines -> Kansas City unless KU falls off a cliff.

My Torvik teamcast sim:

We also should be cheering against Marquette, Wisconsin, and other regionals to not rise to a 3/4 seed line and take a spot...

The problem is there is also the following rule:
Each of the first four teams selected from a conference shall be placed in different regions if they are seeded on the first four lines.

So Kansas City is unlikely unless ISU finishes ahead of KU.

I would assume K-State would want Denver over Des Moines if they got to choose. It's a little farther away from Manhattan, but a big part of KSU's fan base comes from western Kansas.

(I expect both ISU and KSU will fall back a bit by then anyway and wind up as higher seeds, so this won't matter)
