I wanted to start a thread about Bracket prediction. I know its meaningless and its not getting worked up over, but dangit, its entertainment. I waste time watching TV shows that are meaningless, going to movies that are meaningless and playing games that are meaningless, all in the name of entertainment, so I'm going to spend the next 2+ months pouring over any projection I can get my hands on.

As most of of know, the selection committee ranks all teams 1-68. Then starting at #1, they give each team the location closest to their school, no matter what. So what does that mean for Iowa State?

The distance from Ames to each location is in this order. Des Moines, Columbus/Denver (tied), Birmingham, greensboro, albany, orlando, sacremento.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of good teams who are also closest to Des Moines. Kansas, Arkansas, Kansas State, Marquette.
There are also some second tier teams that could move up if they go on a hot streak. Creighton, Missouri, Baylor, Illinois
Another problem is teams that have Des Moines as their second closest. Purdue, Texas, TCU

I'm not worried about Purdue. They will most like get Columbus. I listed out 29 teams and only 4 of them have Columbus as closest (Purdue, Ohio State, Xavier and Indiana) and there aren't too many with Columbus as #2.

Texas and TCU could be a problem. Birmingham is there closest, but its also the closest for Houston, Tennessee, Alabama, Auburn. It could also come into play as an option for Duke, North Carolina or a those teams closest to Columbus.

As such, I think Iowa State at a minimum needs to be a 3 seed to get Des Moines and possibly a 2 seed. They need to finish ahead of Kansas, Kansas State, Texas, TCU, Baylor (at least head of 4 of those).

We’ve got 2 months before that picture even comes close to being clear. I wouldn’t be too hung up over seeding. Plays somewhat of a role with locality. I really don’t care where we play, more concerned about a better matchup and bracket to be honest.

The general take from OP, definitely can't count on Des Moines with anything less than a 3, and a 2 would be ideal.

And correct it too soon to think about it too much, but speculation/projection is fun.

For thought experiment, looking at who's near the top 4/5 lines currently, some of the SEC could gravitate toward Orlando or even Greensboro for some of the slots, freeing TCU/Texas/Houston for Birmingham. Duke and/or UNC almost always gets at least one in Greensboro, but both are below typical levels and who knows, maybe wouldn't even be at 5 seed level (but a LOT of season left and lots of wins available in ACC). As it is now, Virginia gets one of those.

A ton of moving parts. Bottom line I hope ISU just continues to win a lot and if we get high seed with advantageous placement, that's bonus material.

Des Moines -> Kansas City is in play... You have to be silly to not want that.

However, considering KU is heading to a #1 seed. They are getting one of those spots. I'm guessing bracket makers would not want a 4/5 ISU to have that much of a home court advantage, meaning that we have to secure a 2/3 seed for that scenario... We are at least a month of winning away from that even being possible..

Denver would be VERY welcomed as well

The NCAA has actually went the other way as far as proximity goes. They will put any seed close to home if it makes sense.

Check out 2021/22 Wisconsin as the reference. They were in Milwaukee.

We should be actively cheering against Mizzou, K-state, and other regional teams.

Happy you mentioned this. I'd love to see us stun a team in their own backyard like we did to Wisconsin last year in Milwaukee.

Gotta watch Arkansas too, especially if Nick Smith comes back healthy. Des Moines is their second closest and Birmingham looks like it will be full.
