NFL: ***2022 NFL Season Thread***

He definitely has a ton of room to improve, but he's not getting help at all. Watching that game last night, and it was shocking how bad their pass protection was. And then knowing how bad it was, I don't understand some of the play calls, that featured deep dropbacks and down field reads. Fields definitely holds onto the ball too long, but knowing that they can't protect him, there are ways to scheme around that, and there just didn't seem to be much of that in the game plan.
He gets zero protection from the line (as a bears fan I’ve been begging for them to pick o linemen early in the draft for years and they get little to no help there). Plus he holds on to the ball too long. Plus he doesn’t check down. He’s set on who’s he’s going to throw it to long before the play starts and zeros in on them.

And then the guys he is throwing to stink as well. Fields has to improve for sure but the bigger issues are that OL & receiving crew.

When they went D in the draft and made no moves to bring in top O talent....well the writing was on the wall

Is Fields a bust? Too soon to tell, but the organization is doing it's best to kill his career

I wouldn't call him a bust yet. He has shown he his the physical tools to be an NFL QB, he just has to develop the mental parts of the game. Reading a defense, setting his protections, going through his reads, and anticipating when receivers are going to be open instead of waiting until they already are. There are all issues that young QBs tend deal with in the league.

The other part that has likely set Fields back coming into year two was the coaching change. How many of the concepts from last years offense translated over? How much of Nagy's mentorship was useful, and how much had to get retaught? Fields is a second year QB in his second offensive scheme. Honestly, the last two games for the Bears, he has done a lot to put them in positions to win, then got let down by the players around him.

In the preseason I saw a good comparison between this years Bears team, and the 2018 Bills. A defensive led team with an offense that is led by a young quarterback and a lack of talent surrounding him.

Holding on to the ball too long was a knock on him even in college. He takes way too long getting rid of the ball. Fields also is not very accurate in the short to intermediate routes. He does throw the deep ball very well, though.

My biggest worry with Fields is that he doesn't do a very good job of protecting himself when he runs. He slides very late, which causes him to almost get his head taken off multiple times or at least force a 15 yard penalty. Those slides tend to lead to head injuries where the head snaps back and the back of the head hits the turf. If he doesn't do a better job of protecting himself, he won't make it long enough health-wise to become good quarterback.

He looked awful, Gibson is a much better all-around back but he seems to be in the doghouse.
I mean, he was literally shot like a month ago. Pretty amazing recovery to play in the NFL that soon afterwards.

Ohio State always has great athletes who happen to play QB, rather than the other way around. The issues you listed are things, young QBs must improve when they turn pro. At OSU, the athletic part is utilized over the traditional QB tools because it wins them games. But it doesn't normally translate to the NFL when everyone is an outstanding athlete.

That is an amazing list...the best performance on that list by far is the guy who wasn't drafted!

It's shocking to me that, given the powerhouse that OSU is, traditionally, how few of their QBs get drafted early. I mean, they've basically been upper tier every season for the past 25 years, with only a few exceptions. And short of Haskins and Fields, no other first round picks.

Early on it seems like the Jets have forgotten that Breece Hall is most effective when they put the ball in his hands - and not on 2nd and 29 and 3rd and 26.
