*** Official SEMO vs IOWA STATE Game(Day) Thread ***

Not sure what some of you people want. One of the best game one performances we've had in a while. Do we need to clean things up? Sure, but other than the first series, this game was never a heart stopper. We lost a lot in key positions last year. This wasn't about shaking the rust off, this was about breaking the engine in. After the last few years, I'll take this opening game anytime.

Uh oh. The "I'm unconscious" arm thing ...

Same thing happened to Ernst Brun several years ago.
He was definitely out for a short bit after the collision. Then he struggled with concussion protocol. He wasn't happy when. The trainer took his helmet.

Has Campbell always sounded like he's being held hostage on the radio spots he records? I caught a couple of those in the postgame and the difference in charisma between those and real life is...stark. Never really noticed that before.

My Thoughts:

Dekkers looked pretty darn good for first start..Had the 1 bad throw.

Felt Dekkers threw a really nice ball and he can sling it.

XH is a freaking stud.

Totally bumbed about Norton..ugh and ugh. Man he was looking all of the part. Really hope he didn't pull his hammy..

I thought it took 2 qtrs but OL finally started to assert itself and get a rythym and Brock ran hard..

On D. I thought our DB's looked pretty good. LB's did not. SEMO QB I felt was actually very solid and can run but our LB's did not play well.

We basically shut down any run game by them which is good but those QB scrambles killers..

Heacock didn't get fancy at all.. Very basic soft coverage stuff.
Definitely a hammy. He and the trainers were right in front of me working on him. He was reaching for the back of his thigh just under the cheek.

Didn't seem too bad though. After working for a minute or so, they walked away, leaving him to walk it off.

Relaxing opening-day win for a change. I got a tiny bit nervous at end of 1st half, but holding to FG and then the 2nd half drive and it was cruise-control.

Running game got going well after half. Seemed unbalanced in 1st half, but actually I like to see stretching the field, getting some quick passes in space, to open up and pile up some TDs, then follow by more methodical ground-pound. Usually it's vanilla runs and safe passes in early stages and one-dimensional the other way, sometimes kind of stagnant.

If we can replicate that approach vs. Iowa, I like the chances.
Agreed. Stressing the defense vertically early just gives you so much more room to work with. Loved seeing it today and hoping to see that more often this year.

Haven’t read thread or injury update. Was at game. Few thoughts:

- McDonald - what happened to him? Early, he looked slow off the snap. He’ll be fine unless he’s hurt.
- Norton runs like somebody just insulted his sister or mom. Has some Troy in him. I hope he’s ok.
- Dekkers - my ******* god, that man could hit a gnats ass from 50 yards out. Everything I hoped to see. Sooooo much positive there.
- Rocco - nice kid. That delivery is so strange to me. He can zip it but especially after watching Hunter, it looks almost painful the way he loads up and where the balls are when he releases. I’m warning you, once you see it, you can’t unsee it.
- CBs did their jobs. Please pick one of those off next week. If coverage is close to that tight all year, wow.
- Special teams was beyond promising. People literally cheered when he was hitting touchbacks warming up.
- Noel - he’s gonna hit some home runs this year. And it’s gonna be fun.
- Shaw - he’s bigger than people realize. We need him to be a red zone threat.
- crowd was great. Student section moving took more getting used to than I expected. It’s weird over there. And the band thing at half time for them felt weird.
- X - I hope people just watch and take him in. He’s beyond special. Enjoy it. (Playing DMX X gonna give it to ya after the first td was absolute dynamite, crowd loveD it)
- whoever the “GO for IT!! ******* go for it!!” guy is in the west side lower bowl every time we punted, enjoy ur hangover man.

He was getting at least doubled teamed every play, triple teamed occasionally, and I think I saw him quadruple teamed at least once (OL, TE, TE, RB chip). The rest of the D-Line is going to have to step up and help him out or they will have to get pressure from elsewhere.

The good news is, next week, he will know the QB won't be moving out of the pocket.

Keeping a very grounded view of this game. With the exception of the last couple of minutes of the first half, this game was basically on lock down, which is something we don’t get to say often in season openers. But, just as I said mockingly in the KU thread, I want to see us do this against a real team.

I will say this - unlike spot duties the past few years, Dekkers looked really good today. Honestly, he looked better than Purdy did last year. But, once again, I want to see it against a real defense.

Biggest concern was lack of pressure on them, but part of that was their QB's mobility and Heacock had a Vanilla gameplan.
