I’ve attempted to watch some of Rogan’s standup online and didn’t think it was funny at all…. but everyone has different tastes.
He was pretty good in person…I think he’s a decent comedian, not a Chris Rock-level, but I enjoy his podcast too. What was neat is that he had several real good opening acts too- Ron White, Kill Tony…both were funnier than Rogan. Everybody was laughing so much with the openers, by the time Rogan came out, he just had to keep the momentum and he did.
Plus the venue was awesome- maybe 300 people in the entire place, we were 12 feet from the stage- so it was intimate and really fun to interact with the comedians. Ron White was not to be trifled with, if you caught his attention, he would destroy you and heckle you incessantly. If you go to Austin, it’s a great night out. Tickets were $35…it was a heck of a deal.

I'm going to a couple concerts in the Philippines next month. One gig will be 11 death metal bands so I'm excited for that.

Yes- Hans Kim was the very first act when we went. He did a quick 15 minute set. I thought he was good, I was laughing a little, but he had my wife rolling the whole whole time. I’d never heard of him and he was a nice surprise. He’s sharp and was good when he did observational humor.
He relied pretty heavily on racial humor and he pretty much made fun of everyone equally (including himself). I don’t have much of a problem with it if a comedian picks on everybody, but you could tell some of the crowd was getting uncomfortable. He pushes the envelope in that regard, but overall, the crowd liked him and showed him a lot of love when he wrapped up.
Carrie Underwood was pretty good at the State Fair last night. She did something that I wish more artists would do and that is don't do an encore. Near the end of the show she said something like "I'm not going to pretend that we are done playing then make you scream to have me come back out we're just going to play through all the songs to the end" and there was no doubt about it either because as soon as she left the stage and the lights went down the fireworks started. Not a lot of "razzle dazzle" smoke and lights entertainment she and her band just came out and played a quality set and let the music do all the talking. She didn't address the crowd too much and when she did it was pretty short and to the point. She's probably one of those rare artists where her singing is more than enough to entertain me as she sounds spot on live too.
Starlight show is Monday. If you are within 5 hours and have some vacation it's definitely worth traveling to. Starlight is easily the best venue in the region and one of the best in the country. White and their sound system will melt your face off. Crisp, with no distortion.

I don't mind encores, but I can appreciate when an artist doesn't try to do too much audience interaction. Sometimes it's fine. Other times, I'd rather they just played the music.
We saw the Pixies a few years ago at Hoyt Sherman, and their entire show was just a wall of sound, from end to end. Almost no downtime between songs. Very, very little talking to the audience. Just enough time for them to grab a drink of water/beer and wipe their brows with a towel, then right into the next song. The crowd loved it, because they just never let up. The whole show was like a crescendo.
Oh I hear ya, I have been to a few where the artist is way too chatty and just randomly stops their show a few times to talk about pointless stuff to fill some time. I don't mind a quick break here and there because they do need a break to get a drink or cool off but I've been to one where it felt like the artist had to set up every other song with some kind of story and it just killed any kind of buzz they would establish by knocking out several hits in a row.
Two acts that just play and mean business are the Pixies and the Cure. The Cure was even more impressive as they played 36 songs for 3+ hours and took little in the way of breaks.
We were at that show and were also impressed with the pace. Not even enough time in between songs for the cheers to fade just right into the next.
Nothing to do with encores but one show that I found annoying was The Flaming Lips at Waterworks. Wayne was constantly motioning to the audience to up the cheering which just killed the mellow vibe of the show for me. I paid to see the show so don’t tell me how loud I have to cheer.
I would LOVE to see The Cure..... always have been on my bucket list of concerts.
If they tour again, don't be afraid to spend for decent seats and travel. Easily one of the best concerts I've ever seen. David Byrne is another I would tell you to see at all costs. Probably my all-time favorite live performer. Always does the COOLEST ****.
Buddy saw Rammstein at USBank Stadium on Saturday. He said it was the best concert he had ever been to. Over 1,350 tons of equipment for the show!! DuHast!!
Went to Happy Together tour at Hoyt-Sherman last Thursday. Cowsills, Gary Puckett, Turtles, Buckinghams, Vogues and the Association. Someday I’ll learn to not go to a live performance of a group I listened to in the 60’s.

Rammstein live is incredible. Want to see them again. I saw the Cure in California years ago and though it kind of sucked. I was excited to see them.
