Tyrese Hunter Entering the Transfer Portal - NIL Speculation

I honestly thought of this as well. He was the star against LSU and helped lead us to a S16... IF we were to get bounced in the 1st round I think it is less likely were in this postion.

Almost like a trade off now... you want your players to be good but not TOO good or else they'll get poached by the blue bloods.
You still want them to be as good as possible for you while you have them, some will leave and some will stay, and we'll also add transfers in from other schools along the way. Just like always.

I don't know. But this model is not sustainable. Common sense comes into play at some point.

It will be interesting to see how something like Emoni Bates's situation plays out. He basically just had a two month period he just didn't play. I'd imagine some of these people who put up big money will not be real thrilled with this scenario which will put Coaches and ADs in some tough spots.

How many freshman started at PG for a P5 school and enjoyed the honors and recognition Tyrese earned?

Some people have short memories-Tyrese was a top 35 player out of HS. He is an elite talent. TJ raved about his work ethic during the season. He will be a stud wherever he plays. Just hope he doesn't end up at Texas or KU.

He was 37th. Sixth rated PG. Great recruit. Ranked behind Craig Brackens and Lindell Wiggington on list of All Time Highest Ranked Cyclone Recruits.

No argument that he is a great player……..especially for his youth. POTENTIAL is why his loss hurts so much. Work Ethic and Talent. Tyrese has been dealt a tough hand in Life so far. Appreciative of what he gave us. Wish he would have handled this differently. IMO Tyrese has some handlers who are hoping to get money themselves right now. When Tyrese eventually tries for NBA those handlers are likely to get nothing. Hope he considers that when taking their advice.

FRESHMAN of the Year. That is an award versus all other FRESHMEN. Which All Conference Team was Tyrese Hunter on? Nijel Pack was 1st Team All Big 12.

Freshman of the Year. How many Freshmen starters in the Big 12 this year?

Tyrese is extremely talented. But you are overhyping Freshman of the Year. It’s big. But not All Big 12 or anything like that IMO
He was 1 of 15 players on the Naismith defensive players of the year watchlist. Only 5 on that list were guards. Only 2 of the guards were freshmen. 3 of the 15 were freshmen overall.

Hunter is a top 3 defensive player in his class, and top 2 at his position.

He was 5th in steals and 6th in assists all time for big 12 freshman. Freshman record holder for assists and steals for ISU.

He set a freshman assist record on a team that routinely couldn't score 60 points.

Also, I love when people do something for money and then try to hit you with the "you don't know the details or the whole story" bull****. They know it looks bad as hell and then try to shield themselves with "I can't share that private information" to cover themselves. Just effin own it and say you wanted money.

Yeah, with open NIL that song-and-dance needs to end. You don't have to make it sound "greedy" with wording or anything, just say it's part of the incentive. "I want to explore other playing opportunities and NIL possibilities."

Yes. He was a great defensive player. Offensively inconsistent. Blows up against LSU in the NCAA with 7 Three Pointers. Visibility of that game underscoring his potential if he becomes offensively consistent are what is driving this. He has a chance to parlay things to get NIL money short term. Enter the Portal. Let the bidding begin. The Grass is always Greener. Hope it works out for him. Lipsey will likely get more PT this next year. Don’t expect him to start at PG. Williams or a PG transfer most likely. TJ will be on the hunt.

That was an injury though wasn’t it?

FWIW, I saw an Indiana U message board post that has Emoni Bates visiting IU on Thursday. Indiana having a huge spring so far.

I’m pretty sure he’s pretty good isn’t he? Thought I’ve been seeing him in the lottery in recent NBA mock drafts?
No. Have you seen his Memphis combine measurements? Negative wingspan. Only a 25 inch vertical and really slow times in the sprint drills. Like barely faster than Garza. Not a good defender at all. I think some have him as a late first pick next year but I would be shocked if that actually happens. Memphis was better without him on the floor.

It would appear to me the most valuable asset of any program right now is a fanbase full of basketball-enthused dip****s willing to waste their money on the whims of a 19 year old with an attitude problem. I think Indiana is prepared to excel in this space.

The Athletic reviewed three recently signed name, image and likeness contracts, each with a different school collective. A four-star receiver will make more than $1 million over four years; a defensive lineman ranked in the top 10 at his position will make $1 million over three years; and a three-star defensive lineman will make $500,000 over four years. The Athletic agreed to preserve the anonymity of all parties involved.

Mathing that out... that's $100-300k per player, annually, depending a bit on stars and position. So a typical recruiting class of 25 will cost you $2-10M per year. So maybe $10-40M annually in player "salaries". Coaching staffs now make what, $10-20M? So I am kinda OK with that; the players deserve to get some of the $$$ being thrown around. At least until there is a AAA professional league for 18-20 yo like the G-League.

So Texas' payroll will be $50M and ours will probably be more like $10M because we will have more 2 star and walk on types making $10k. I mean, that's not too much worse than it is now, in terms of financial ammunition and disparity. But my concern remains that when a low-payroll team finds a gem (Breece, Brock, Will McD, Isheem) and pays them $100k annual, Texas swoops in and offers 3-5x for a proven commodity. Buying players.

He was good for a freshman. Overall he got Big 12 FOY because of volume, also a big reason as to why our offense was inefficient.

The UNC guy didn’t think so. From Eric The Red, on WI board:

“As for Hunter ... about all he can say is "scoreboard." He's got a brick of a jump shot and turns the ball over too much. 100-out-of-100 coaches (including TJ) would take Chucky (or a healthy Bowman) over him. Frankly, I'll be shocked if he doesn't transfer from ISU after being recruited over. TJ will find someone better.”
