Basically we were trading the following:
- Hogue
- BDJ, who was starting NBA games
- Naz due to injury in the early non-con
For:
- Junior Burton, not Big 12 tourney/Purdue Burton
- Improvement from Niang, Thomas and Morris and I guess McKay?
I think it's a fair argument, but people are dramatically overselling how good Burton was as a Junior when evaluating that team. Burton made a big jump from his Junior to Senior season. No one argues that. And consider that big jump got him a third team all conference nod.
But you can't on one hand act like Burton as a Jr. is the same, and not realize that the other rotation guy was Hallice Cooke, and the spot minute emergency big man was Simeon Carter. Also, if you are going to use the "Burton was the 6th man" argument, the prior year vs. UAB our bench was Nader, BDJ and Thomas, all NBA guys.
Didn't Thomas get benched for the whole 2nd half of the UAB game despite being the one player that played like it was an NCAA tourney game?
You forgot Nader made tremendous improvement that year but it was heavily offset by the dropoff in McKay. Nader doesn't make NBA without his gains under prohm.
I think that’s correct. About all else I haven’t been able to scrub from the sad memories is we kept throwing it in to McKay and he couldn’t catch the ball to save his life.
Prohm and McDermitt were both bad coaches while at ISU. However, there were times when I enjoyed ISU basketball under Prohm, and I can’t say that under McDermitt. That is enough for me to say McDermitt was worse, even through Prohm had the worst year in the history of ISU basketball and inherited a good situation. Still, if I had a choice of either to coach my team, the obvious choice is McDermitt.

TJ has 20 wins so far. Absolutely fantastic job of somehow winning with less talent. Great Coaches do that. Prohm would struggle to equal last year’s pitiful record.
Have to agree here. TJ has some things to work on as a coach, but gods almighty, he did put together an above average team out of a big pile of nothing. And he did it in a hurry.
If he can develop himself as a coach and improve, he will be more than good for us long term. Consider Scott Drew. We used to joke about how he could only recruit and waste timeouts. He's become a darn good coach in about every way - he won a title FFS, no one would have believed that 10 years ago. Maybe that's all on Tang, but Drew was the guy who hired him. I hope TJ follows a similar path.
He had a top 10 finish under his belt like 11 or 12 seasons ago, so actually probably quite a few would've thought it possible. Probably not CF, which was loaded with people that at the same time thought Trent Johnson was a really good coach and he didn't win at TCU only because it's a terrible program and nobody could win there.

Prohm’s 2016 team was horrendous against tough opponents. 2-8 vs teams who were elite (Home 1-15/Neutral 1-25/Away 1-40).
Hard to know what @jereseib would say if Prohm reached 25 wins, since you know, Prohm never reached 25 wins. He did almost get 25 losses though! Best recruiter and talent scout in ISU history IMO but by far the worst in game coach by a mile.
Separate from the Fred-Prohm debate, that 2015 quad list shows the big hurdle for that team vs. potential for deep run -- could have gone several rounds AS LONG AS we could get past the sh*t first. And we didn't.
What Jere would have said if he 25 wins wasn't a question. The next year was underachieving even with 24 wins because of totally unacceptable loss to Purdue in the tourney. One more win wasn't going to make jere go......"gee, Steve is okay". So we can take jere off the table.
As for your post......it is proving what myself and many have been saying for years.........you just can't give Steve credit without conditions. The guy won 23 games and made the sweet sixteen and you use retroactive numbers to what.......prove it smoke and mirrors?
I have said the Fred vs Steve thing isn't me because I like Fred. But with this post I think we can close the book on any of you just saying he did a good job during his good years.........period. You guys just can't do it.
I don't get it and it's becoming arguing just to argue. I fear in the future someone comes back with new analytics some geek creates to really find out TJ's first year actually sucked. Even though he is past 20 wins and going to the tourney.
A winning season is a winning season. A sweet 16 is a sweet 16. However for some reason at ISU that's not the case. Sad...but true.
