WILLIAMS: Analyzing Iowa State’s NCAA Tournament situation after a big week

The Top 16 reveal on Saturday was really good news for us.

A.) The Big 12 dominated with 4 teams in the Top 16.

B.) The committee is high on Wisconsin and Providence and left Houston out of the top 16. Wisconsin and Providence are the extreme resume>>>predictive metrics teams. Houston has terrific predictive metrics, is #4 in the NET rankings, but has 0 quad 1 wins. We like to see more value being placed on Quad 1 wins and resume quality rather than NET and predictive metrics.

If we can finish the regular season 2-2 and win our first game in KC, we are flirting with a 6 seed. The bracket matrix hasn't updated following the weekend results but most have us on the 7 line where things stand now.

I don't disagree. But look at the teams he has in the 8/9 seeds. Maybe swap out ISU and Marquette? Every other team Iowa State has a better resume and it's not debatable.

I would agree that we are pretty even-keel with Marquette overall. Frankly, I would put both teams on the 9/10 line respectively. And I’m alright with that.

Palm has really liked us this year overall. We are actually the #1 7 seed on his bracket so closer to a 6 than an 8. Which is crazy to me.

Palm also had us as a #1 seed early on in the year. Confused with that love, but he’s projecting very lofty for us. But it’s all guessing a game…

I tend to put more weight with ESPN’s Joe Lunardi’s Bracketology. I’ve seen his results compared to the bracket. I don’t necessarily like him, but they’re simply unmatched with others..

He’s not very good at it, actually. Looks like someone posted the rankings but he just happens to be the most known, not the best.

I think we are closer overall to a 6 seed than a 10 seed, which I’ve seen us projected on numerous brackets. Compare our resume to their other 9 and 10 seeds and it’s not close. Win 3 out of the next 4 and I would be surprised if we aren’t in the 6 seed range.

This is where the great Non-Con should help ISU in getting in the Tourney and even higher seeding than expected.
Being in the rankings for the first 3+ months and the eyes of the decision makers/media who aren't watching every minute on ESPN+ have giving the program the benefit of the doubt in close resumes cases.
