Hy-Vee's weirdest business decision yet?

Hy-Vee is in a tough space because the big boys (Walmart and to a lesser extent Target) are getting better at groceries and will thrash HV at prices. So they want to try to build a brand that reinforces their customer base. HV is going for a cool, young brand that has a streaming service and a dating show.

I’m convinced a big reason that Target exists is to cater to people who wanna feel superior to Walmart shoppers. Same idea here with what Hy-Vee is trying to build on.

Disagree on Target. The shopping experience is much much better there. Walmart checkout lines are horrible, the stores are largely not the cleanest (there are exceptions) and Target is fantastic with ordering ahead.

I don't feel superior to a Walmart shopper, but I'm really cool with paying an extra nickel for a tube of Crest if my experience is better.

If you shop at Target make sure you have the Redcard. 5% off everything every time keeps things closer to Walmart prices.

I'm not sure if its the superior thing, I think its just the differences and quality.
I think Walmart probably has more disposable items where Target's are probably better.
Like, say you want to but a nice knife block, a nice lamp, I think Target probably has the better options.
 
If they want a reality TV show I would instead propose a Shark Tank style show where people pitch insane ideas to the Hy Vee Board of Directors and watch in astonishment when they actually go for them.

Fear factor now is actually shopping at a HyVee and trying to avoid getting hit with their industrial shopping carts whipping up and down the aisles. "Move out of the way peasant! I've got online orders to fill!"

Or, getting your cart to your car.....tearing off the flag on your car, jumping in the car and then trying to make it out of the parking lot. The person who does it the fastest without getting hit by another car, shopper or cart gets that much closer to the cash.

"So you're going to want to head down this aisle until you hit the interactive sting ray touch tank and go right until you've reached the trampoline park. Be careful though, Tuesdays are axe throwing league in the meat department so you will want to avoid there. If you hit the pet groomers you've gone too far."

Target layout in Ames has the grocery items on the way northside of the building not real convenient. Walmart layout is a lot better, but still have to dodge the Tyrannosaurus Rex type carts they use for online orders. I'm an early AM shopper so don't really have to deal with a lot of 40 years guys following their mom around the grocery section, motorized scooters, or people in their pajamas. Get in, and get out.

Hy-Vee at 7 am still has pallets full of stock items in the aisles. Like going through an obstacle course.
 
As someone with a perspective on other grocery chains, namely Kroger and Giant Eagle, they are also trying crazy **** all of the time. Kroger had a scanner that you just set your items on to this speeding fast belt, it had a scanning device over the top of the belt and scanned the items at like some crazy rate and flew them down to a bagging area that was sometimes manned by an employee and sometimes not. It didn’t last long.

The grocery industry is crazy, some of the monthlies and quarterly industry journals/magazines are wild.

Bur first take your car to the oil change bay. Once you have the creamed corn, come get your iphone upgraded, and then bring your kid to a movie theatre after stopping at the microwave popcorn station. Schedule your haircut BEFORE you enter the movie!

Last week I was next in line at the check out and an employee steps in front of me to refill the gum. Dumps a bunch of packages right on the belt. I gave him 30 seconds, before I said he needs to move now.

I used to make fun of those people that went grocery shopping at Menard's at 8am on Saturday, but I'm starting to get it.

You'd think they'd have plenty of time to do it overnight with the stores no longer being 24/7. Now it's just more hours of the day theyve got crap out in the aisles.
