NFL: ***2022 NFL Season Thread***

You should probably listen to what Orlovsky said about that play. First, it was an insanely stupid play call. Second, it was insanely stupid for Dak to hand the ball to his center to spot it himself - literally said you are never taught in that situation to ever do anything other than to hand the ball back to the official, and yet they did that stupidity anyway. With the insanity of everything that went down on that final play they would have never gotten the play off regardless because they never would have been allowed to snap the ball until the ref was clear of the LOS anyway. This isn't on the refs - this is on the Cowboys for handling those 6 seconds in the absolute worst way imaginable.

Yeah, I mean that’s stuff I’ve said already, but sure.

My only question is if it’s normal for the ref not to follow the play until it’s over, especially in a last second situation like that. If it is whatever but that’d be news to me.

And they aren’t supposed to move until the play is over? Legit question btw, I don’t know.

I know I’m the target of the cowboy haters since I’m the only one posting, so go for it, I can take it. Especially from a bunch of Viking fans.

Generally yes, the Umpire would not start jogging down the field until the play is well beyond him. He's watching for holding, chop blocks, etc.

It's hard to call those things accurately while jogging. There is some degree of "flowing with the play" but it's always going to be behind the play. It will naturally take maybe 2-3 seconds to recognize.

Citation: several years as a high school official (including Umpire)

There it is, then. Refs didn't do anything out of the ordinary on that play. It was a combination of a risky play call and Dak waiting too long to slide. I can give Dak a pass on his part. In the heat of the moment, I can see him not judging the time correctly, or not seeing the clock. And they damn near got it clocked. It was just a really, really risky play call with 14 seconds left and no timeouts.

ESPN will be upset about the Cowboys.

Always kind of a feeling on their morning shows that this is the year.

That show being successful completely confounded me. I don’t get the draw to either of them.

I think there was a time when it was entertaining and I'd take it in but at some point it was just that the whole time. Literally hot takes yelled back and forth.

What the hell? I put my son to bed and the Chiefs were down by 7.
