Officiating travesty in Lawrence

So, the officials can stop play after a change of possession, given a player is bleeding and then go and investigate why it happened, debate on the actual situation for minutes, and then assess what is a foul when no foul was originally called, because they missed it. (Not arguing the foul here, just setting up a situation.)

But, they can't stop the game or review at clock stoppage a non-debatable, provable rule infraction like basket interference off the backboard if they don't make the call originally, because they missed it.

Pretty stupid, unequal application of the rules that are supposed to provide an even playing field. One way or another folks.

How did they even know it was an elbow or that it wasn’t someone on the same team? What happens then? If the rule is based on player safety why does it matter who is throwing the elbows around?

Kansas fans are literally the only fans in the country that won't acknowledge that officials absolutely sh!t themselves in that building. This isn't an Iowa State/Kansas thing this is a historical pattern of blown calls and weird **** benefiting Kansas in the Phog. It's almost comedy at this point.

It’s also why they have so many flameouts in the ncaa tournament.

A flagrant 1 foul (men's) or unsportsmanlike foul (women's) involves excessive or severe contact during a live ball, including especially when a player "swings an elbow and makes illegal, non-excessive contact with an opponent above the shoulders". This offense includes the former "intentional foul" of fouling an opposing player to prevent an easy breakaway score. In women's basketball only, the unsportsmanlike foul also includes contact dead-ball technical fouls. The penalty for a flagrant 1 or unsportsmanlike foul is two free throws and a throw-in for the opposing team at the out-of-bounds spot nearest the foul.

Setting a screen is not excessive. He did not swing an elbow. He did not foul to prevent a breakaway score. It meets none of the criteria for a flagrant foul.

The ISU player swung his elbow during a live ball and made contact above the shoulders. Textbook definition of a flagrant.
1. The ISU player did not swing his elbow. He raised his elbow to pivot. To be honest, the Kansas player could have been called for a foul for running into his elbow. During the 2015 NCAA Championship game, Bo Ryan was complaining because Bronson Koenig was elbowed in the chin by Tyus Jones and Koenig was called for a foul. The fact is, the call was correct. Bronson Koenig fouled Jones (who was shooting) with his chin.

2. The illegal screen by McCormick (sp?) sort of reminds me of the foul Robert Horry committed on Steve Nash in the NBA playoffs a number of years ago. He ran over, didn't get in position, didn't make it in time, and hip-checked Nash. I know that the NBA is a different league with different rules but, for perspective, Horry was ejected from the game and suspended for 2 playoff(!) games.

Should we start the officiating travesty thread for the next KU game now or wait for it to actually happen? It could just be a few hundred videos of screw jobs until the actual new screw job happens.

You’re making these mutually exclusive points. I never said the calls weren’t atrocious. They were.

the only self delusion is focusing entirely on 2 calls that go against you in a 40 minute basketball game. Anyone that knows anything about basketball knows damn well going into that game you’ve got to be at least 6 points better than KU to actually pull out a win there. It sucks, but it’s true.

To imply that a couple bad calls early in the game carry the same weight as a couple blown calls during crunch time is absolutely dumb.

If he didn't elbow him in the head and draw blood then yes, I agree that it likely would not have been called "excessive" and assigned a flagrant 1.

But he did.
If JCL didn't run into his elbow with his head...

By stating it truthfully, the conclusion needs to be stated differently.

I was just thinking about some money against this KU team in second round. They look pretty soft and imagine when there’s a chance of playing 5 on 5.

They don't sh!t themselves. They reward themselves.

I know it's a ridiculous statement but, WTH, it's my right (well, probably more of a privilege) to be angry at the absurdity of it.

Steve Nash was dribbling. The Spurs needed to foul and Horry just hip checked him into the scorer's table. No screen involved.

You’re clearly an idiot. We can’t make the number of completely self inflicted mistakes that we do and then just complain about a goaltending call.

and coping mechanism? Seriously? Blaming the game completely in the officiating is a coping mechanism?

melt me ask you this. What do you think the coaching staff is going to do in film session? Review the Jones flagrant and the goaltend? Or go back and point out little things we could have done to swing the game many points in the other direction?

I will be quiet and wait for your answer.

The officiating was a disaster, but we left easy points on the table elsewhere all on our own.

I think it really boils down to the blatant history of ku basketball being absolutely gifted games by the officials over the years that bothers people more so than a blown goal tending call, and a really questionable flagrant call

then there are the dumb ass Kansas fans who try to pretend that this hasn’t happened over and over, who make it worse.

as to the rest, of course the coaches aren’t going to dwell on the officiating, but fans aren’t coaches.

it’s ok to talk about how much the big 12 sucks when it comes to rescuing Kansas basketball. Just like big 12 fans should be pissed at how many terrible ncaa losses ku has had when not getting that protection. **** usc just scored again

You are correct. I should probably restate that. Thanks.

Also, I do totally believe that Nash put a bit of extra drama there. This is not meant to excuse the blatantly dirty foul.

The real travesty in all that was Suns players were suspended incredibly strictly for leaving the bench when Horry took an obvious cheap shot.

Earlier in the same game Duncan did the same thing after hard foul on his teammate and no suspension. It decided an NBA championship as they were obviously the best two teams.

They said Horry’s cheap shot was an “altercation” and the foul Duncan left the bench over wasn’t. So the Spurs got rewarded because their foul was more intentional and more purposefully trying to injure a player.

But he did.

So should this play have been a flagrant 1?

I'd say no, but I don't know. There was a lot more blood than yesterday, so by your logic, maybe. If you're really justifying the call because there was blood, that's ridiculous.

I went back and watched the play again. It's not even accurate to say Jones swung his elbow. Jones was going down the lane and both he and JCL reacted to the ball going in the air as Kansas got a steal. JCL reacted faster and ducked to start moving towards the ball/going down court. Jones had been starting to put his arms up to indicate that he was open and had position for a dunk or layup, and when JCL ducked he put his face right into Jones's elbow. It's a weaker call than I even remembered it being. Jones knew that JCL was on his backside, but had no way of knowing that JCL was anywhere close to his arms.

Was at the game so didn't see the Jones play too well. From the one replay I think they put it looked so so to me but I wouldn't complain about that.

There were missed calls both ways. The missed GT was atrocious but so was the over and back earlier in the game. Obviously the margin of error isn't there at the end which makes it more crucial. We were fortunate to even be in that position given how stagnant/atrocious our offense was the entire game. If we can't/won't attack the basket and are content to pass around the perimeter it will be a tough BIg 12 season. On that note, given our difficulties, I'm not sure why Brockington didn't attack until 5 minutes left in the game. We needed that sooner.

Probably my biggest irritation though is how DeJuan Harris uses his offhand to clear/push whenever he has the ball. Never gets called for it but should. Absolutely hated it was him that hit a ******** shot to win the game.

We need to fix our offense and find ways to score in the half-court. Thirty seconds of passing + Brockington won't cut it in this league.

To imply that a couple bad calls early in the game carry the same weight as a couple blown calls during crunch time is absolutely dumb.

Welllll.. I say something like this often, so I am sorry to have to disagree.

A few blown calls early in a game can make your best player sit with 2 fouls and allow the other team to make a run, let's say 15-5 that makes a 5 point game into a 15 point game. Given many other factors that go on in a game. How is that any different than that happening in the last 5 minutes? The advantage has been given. There is more time to recuperate from the blow, but the blow has still been received.

That's like saying that someone who hits 5 3 pointers in the fist half and helps the team grow a large lead is not as impressive as the same guy who hits them in the second half to grow a large lead or win the game by 1. They are both as important to the final outcome. It may be harder toward the end of the game, the pressure may be higher and it might take a different kind of person to execute when the chips are down. But, the points are no more or less important either way.

Same thing could be said about foul calls. You know how you play when you have no fouls and you seemingly are getting away with everything? Now, how about when you have 4 fouls? Different player quite often. Now, to get to 4 fouls you have to pass 1,2 and 3. If fouls 1 and 2 are ********, then that is no more or less important than foul #4 or when any of those fouls are called. That early ******** foul call affected the game because it eventually affected the way a player played.

I don't really like the idea that things only matter at the ends of games. I ESPECIALLY don't like the "let 'em play" or "you can't call that in this situation" opinions that come up toward the end of the games. If it was a call earlier in the game that would have been made. It needs to be a call in the final :01 of the game. Period.

@CycloneRulzzz should just state in the gameday thread that it's ISU vs. Big 12 Refs/Kansas
