All FB coaching rumors and speculation

Iowa state can never match what the big boys have for pay. Iowa state offers the building and having your statue outside the stadium. If Matt Campbell doesn’t want that…. Scraping up 6 million/year and offering is just foolish

It will be interesting to see what happens over the next few days.

I believe him when he says he has not talked to anybody and he has yet to hire an agent. I believe him when he says he as been solely focused on this team and this season. He also is aware his name is being bounced around for a lot of big brand jobs. These are all things he has said recently.

It's now his time to focus on what is best for himself and his family and decide accordingly.

The process will go something like this.
  • He will talk to JP about what the future looks like at ISU.
  • He will talk to some of the places showing strong intrest in him.
  • He will talk things over with his wife and family.
  • He will talk to a few of his mentors that he trusts.
  • After he has done that he will make his decision.
Going through that process will give himself certainty in his decision and wont be a distraction next year in whatever he decides. The process will play out quickly.

I hope he choses to stay. If he chooses to stay, I would ask that he be less insulting to ISU and it's fans.

Pay him whatever he wants. Money may not be the deciding factor, but you need to eliminate it as an issue. People don’t feel valued if they’re underpaid. Fred was underpaid for years. Keeping coach Campbell is the best shot ISU has at finding a good landing spot if the conference falls apart. Pollard has had some great hires. IMO his biggest mistake is underpaying great coaches.

How is he insulting?

I agree. We cannot have Matt be at the bottom of P5 coaches. My guess is “what he wants“ would not break the bank. He would likely ask for more for assistants and an appropriate bump for himself with a long term commitment with a modest buyout for a couple select schools.

My biggest concerns on this round is not the lure of USC or UW. Rather, if it is true Brian Kelly was ready to leave for Texas last year, I am concerned that Kelly takes USC and Matt goes to Notre Dame. Matt could do a ton with his process/culture at Norte Dame and never worry about anything.

If Matt stays this year, the best thing we can do is allow him to pay his assistants well enough so the next CMC is perpetually on the staff and would simply take the reigns if he leaves.

If Matt is ever offered the ND job I'll help him pack.

That's a good fit for him at the highest level of college football.

USC is not.

I am all for the "pay him whatever it takes to keep him crowd"...but how will that impact resources in the "new" Big 12? I am sure it is on this site somewhere...but our revenues are going to decline without UT and OU correct? That said (and I know it is s private school)...if Liberty can justify $4 million then Iowa State should be able to double that!

Liberty is a private school with rich cult members who will donate if the cult leader tells them to in the name of god.

Paying a guy 5 million after 5 straight bowl games, 5 straight winning conference seasons, the most big 12 victories by any coach? Well worth it.

If pollard tries to go cheap, he should be fired.

Not to mention the 2nd best winning % in the last however many years.

Yes revenues will decline some - but there's different tiers to revenue though in simplest terms in general, you could probably expect overall revenue to decline but some reports have said it might not be as drastic of a drop as originally thought but still less, yes.

That said, most universities can afford a 4-5 million head coach if they wished to invest that much in athletics. As evidenced by how many programs are now starting to offer just that

Obviously I'd never pretend to tell CMC what to do in his own best interest but if Iowa State could get to $5 million and offer reasonably factored in raises for staff / assistants... that's a pretty attractive package IMO. Great fan base, improving stadium - facilities and a place where expectations are raising which might make things a tad more tense, sure, but compared to expectations at LSU / USC, etc.... expectations are still largely more balanced

I agree with you on that from my perspective. But if Monday (or any other day) CMC announces he is going to USC...I would be happy for him! He knows what he wants and needs in that profession and if he decides that is a challenge he wants to confront...good for him! I would cheer loudly for USC! BUT...I hope that isn't the scenario that plays out...I want him in Ames another 20+ years because I am selfish!

The troubling issue there is that...almost sadly...$4 to $5 million coaches will be average or below average for the production/outcome we have come to expect! So while we all believe CMC isn't all about the money, in the new Big 12 how will it look if CMC is making less than the OSU, BU, Houston and maybe other coaches? $4 to $5 million looks big right now but it won't be long until that number barely registers.
