Yellowstone - new TV "western"

I've thought this whole show is similar to Dallas. Instead of the family fighting ith each other for control of Ewing Oil, and protecting it from outsiders, Yellowstone is doing the same with the ranch.

John = Jock - the patriarch
Beth = JR - ruthless and wants control
Kaycee = Bobby - spouse (Monica/Pam) wasn't initially welcomed. The good guy.
Jamie = Gary - pushed away by most of the family
Chief Rainwater = Cliff Barnes - trying to get back what was taken from his people
Rip = Ray - characters aren't quite the same, but both are the ranch foreman

Still need a Sue Ellen and Miss Ellie.

That's a pretty good comparison actually but not sure Beth is really the true JR of the family. She is in some ways similar to JR because she is ruthless but she isn't fighting for control from John/Jock or Kayce/Bobby like JR was with trying to gain control from his family while Beth is fighting with her family to keep what they have not against them. Jamie kind of has turned against his family now but he is in no ways a ruthless evil villain like JR so yeah he is kind of like Gary. In the reboot it was very apparent that it was family vs family with Bobby and Christopher on 1 side and JR and John Ross on the other.

I see they put out a new teaser trailer yesterday with a vague timeline of "coming this fall" and really the only new footage shown was at the end with Rip finding John on the roadside and saying "John, don't you die on me now. Not like this!" as he rushes out of his truck. I get that Covid likely delayed their filming some but post-production is really taking awhile this time as past seasons usually come out around Father's day and sounds like this season won't drop until about the same time all the other prime time shows would drop. It's been a long year waiting to find out what happened with the cliff hangers they left us!

New season 4 trailer dropped today and sure is a lot of quick snippets that get the gears turning again. Two hour premiere is nice, it has been a LONG wait since the cliff hangers from season 3 so it is going to be must see TV that night.

A few observations from the trailer:
- looks like the ranch got hit too, I wondered this because at the end of season 3 when all the other action was going down it looked like Monica was startled from something loud nearby and appears the ranch hands are scrambling and even Monica is with a gun
- appears that the sheriff's department maybe was targeted too or maybe involved in responding to an attack
- Jamie's biological father is going to be involved this season and you can only guess some the hits he was involved with
- There is a scene where Mo attacks someone at the casino hand then drags him out of the back of an SUV later. Looks like maybe the reservation has been targeted too or possibly coming to the aide of the Duttons because they don't want the development to happen either?
- Lot of split second scenes with guns drawn, fights, or confrontations that even after pausing them I can't get a good feel about who some of the people in them are or what it may be about. All I know is looks like there is going to be a lot of people getting their ass beat or killed this season over this battle for the Dutton Ranch land.

I went back through the quick scene shots scene-by-scene. Here's what (I think) some of it showed:

Lloyd getting punched & knocked back (bloody face)
Monica hunkered down behind a counter with - I think - one of the ranch hands (looks like he was injured)
Jamie with a hand gun saying "what about right or wrong"
The blonde barrel racer curled up against the barn crying
The ex-con walking near the barn & raising his gun
At 1:05 there's a woman with her hair pulled back and you can see about 1/2 of the back of someone's head. It almost looks like Beth's hair. That's the only clue I have that she possibly survived - if that's her.

I agree. It looks like Jamie's biological father is going to be involved. I can't help but wonder if there's something with the ex-con, too. It seems kind of strange to me that he hates the place so much but didn't get out-of-state like he was told to. ~shrug~

All I know is once November gets here, I'll have a lot more to watch on tv! (Have you checked out the Mayor of Kingstown trailer yet?)

I may bite the bullet and subscribe to Paramount + this winter just to see that and Yellowstone 1883. Both are Taylor Sheridan shows and if they are even half as good as Yellowstone has been it will be worth watching I think.

One thing on one of your comments, I think Walker is hanging around the Yellowstone for awhile. Ryan Bingham plays the character and he's a singer-songwriter in real life and they have featured some of his original songs on the show so I see it mutually beneficial for both him and the show to keep him relevant on the show. Walker may hate the place but after already avoiding the train station once and helping murder another former branded man I can't imagine he'd be wanting to press his luck a 2nd time after witnessing that. I still love the scene where Rip and Lloyd stop in for a beer at an out of town bar and Lloyd turns around and sees Walker playing and says "he's supposed to be dead." Right then you knew they weren't just going to let him get away again. That whole episode was a good one with him and Lloyd and their road trip with the wild horse that for as badass Rip can be he also has a soft side too.

If you are a Taylor Sheridan fan, you’ll enjoy ‘Wind River’ which is one of his efforts.

Beth is too central of a character to be killed off. There is no way she, John, Casey, or Rip get killed off.

Thanks for the recommendation. Based on the description I may have to check this out. We binge watched Longmire last year and loved that series. This looks like it's right in that wheelhouse of Longmire and Yellowstone. I see that Graham Greene is in it and he was in Longmire too. Ian Bohen who is on Yellowstone too, cast looks pretty solid from what I can tell.

Complete agree - Bingham is going to continue to be a decent part of the show. I love the fact that they are using him as an actor in it and are also using a lot of his songs.

We already know that Rip is fine, he was driving when all this happened and finds John. John will be fine, no way they kill off the biggest name on the show. I think Casey and Beth will survive but if 1 were to get killed off Beth's predicament seems the more likely not to survive. I think the Jimmy character is likely the 1 of all of them that is dead as his story line has pretty much run it's course.

Speaking of Yellowstone, I am currently watching the season 2 finale on Paramount as I type this. Man it was a good season and Neal McDonough was such a good villain that season. I miss Danny Huston who was another good adversary too. The more I watch this show the more I appreciate Sheridan's eye for talent. Whenever they introduce a new character to the show they just elevate the show even more and the supporting characters that have been a part of all 3 seasons have basically created a show where there are multiple characters people gravitate to as their favorite. Costner is the big name but Rip and Beth are probably the most popular characters on the show while there are several in the bunkhouse like Lloyd, Jimmy, Ryan, Colby, and bringing in Teeter last season added another great character to like. Guessing Will Patton's character will have a bigger role in season 4 and he's another great actor on this cast. Hoping this is a series that has some longevity even after Costner may inevitably leave it at some point.

So they are mixing in some new season 4 clips in this marathon right now. Just saw a quick trailer/commercial that has not been dropped on social media yet and Jamie's biological father definitely is going to be part of the chaos this season it appears.

I like the show but it's "over the topness" is wearing on me to the point I may quit watching. Also, I can't stand the daughter I wish she'd get "put on a train".

What do you find over the top about it? Beth is a badass, I dunno what you don't like about her but I'd admire the hell out of any woman in real life had they gone through what she has. If anyone is annoying on the its Jamie as he's a whiny ***** that never really has been much of a likable character at any point.

Forgot to reply but we watched this movie the other month and it was pretty good. My brother lives just to the NE of the actual Wind River Reservation so told him he ought to watch it sometime too. It's interesting to see some of the same actors from Yellowstone cast in it in a different role. Kelsey Asbille (Monica) Gil Birmingham (Rainwater) were good and Ian Bohen (Ryan) had a short appearance as well. Graham Greene who was in the Longmire series (another great show BTW) and Jeremy Renner as the main character were also very good.

I think I will try to watch Hell or High Water sometime. Looks like Gil and Taylor Sheridan are both cast in that and Jeff Bridges and Katy Mixon are notable names too. We're going to pay for Paramount + just to watch Mayor of Kingstown and Yellowstone 1883 that drops soon. Already have the DVR set and planning to make Sunday appointment TV for the 2 hour Season 4 premiere that has been a LONG wait!

A lot to unpack from last night's 2 hour premiere. Won't spoil the fates of the main characters from season 3's finale cliffhangers or any big moments from last night just yet in case some have not seen. Will say the new characters they added especially the kid is going to add some new dynamics this season I think. As expected Rip is probably going to be on a rampage seeking revenge this season as they start to piece things together.

Someone else can break the ice on what went down last night if they want, I just don't want to be the one who spoils it for someone just yet :)
