Really stupid taunting call.

By agreeing it’s a dumb penalty, was a dumb call and should have never had a flag thrown.

That’s a first for me getting such a visceral reaction about something I agreed with people about.
I've heard that being called "violently agreeing with someone".

The call itself I can't argue with as he did excessively celebrate.

BUT far worse gets done all the time with nothing and if anything happens it's assessed after the play.

There you go. No excessive anything. If that is a penalty the rule needs to be revisited. It was not a penalty. Scurrilous (on the part of the ref).

similar penalty against tulsa a few years ago:

believe it cost them the game

iirc, they changed the rules around this a few years back (maybe 2010 or 2011?) -- however I think you could make the argument that in the Iowa State instance, it was a pretty weak call and flag shouldn't have been thrown
This is closer to unsportsmanlike in that he holds the ball out and takes a couple high steps, but no where near what I feel the rule is there for. By the letter of the law, yes you can throw a flag on this one or on X, but situations matter. The rule is there to prevent players from excessive celebrations and instigating a reaction from the other team, not to police all celebrating

I can’t believe some people think there was even a remote bit of justification for this call.
Some people have this weird fascination with giving every little bit of cover to officials they can. Yes he broke his stride a little bit but I don’t know about other people but I break my stride regularly when walking especially when I start thinking about walking.

The problem I have with the people saying he could have done something different is that it would suggest that the call wasn’t clearly and indisputably wrong.

So can someone explain to me why you can’t slightly change your gait mere inches from the goal line but you can do an Irish jig after a sack?

Who did the jig and what team?

Actually I think not much happens if the player is not facing the opponent in that situation although a full dance seems like it would get more attention.

None of it makes sense and the nfl is even worse. Can’t spike a ball after a catch but after an interception the entire defense sprints to the other side of the field to pose for some camera on the wall.

I've been a ref. Not football and not at a college level. So when I see calls made, I can see it from both a fan perspective and a ref perspective.

That said, I'm pretty much completely on the side that this was a horrible call. At the very least this should have been a call where the refs huddle up an discuss whether or not this was to the level of making the call.

Some calls are hardliners, if the players foot is out of bounds play stops. Other calls are subjective and the spirit of why the rule exists has to come into play. Pass interference is the one we all know, because it's so inconsistent (and difficult for the refs to get right). Obviously what X did was not taunting and wasn't excessive in any way. Unsportsmanlike? Lol, no.

I agree -- the intent of the rule is to prevent excessive celebration / taunting before a player gets into the end zone, so in the Iowa State vs. Oklahoma State case, the flag seems a little ridiculous. I remember worrying when Darius Reynolds held the ball out (I believe vs. UConn in 2012), and I was worried they may throw a flag and bring it back, but we lucked out on that one.

Actually found the highlight there:

The rule should be abolished completely especially since college players get to witness NFL players essentially being allowed to do whatever they want now, but the only time this should be called is if a player does something ridiculous. And even then, the rule change a few years ago to it being a spot foul is ludicrous too.

Bingo. It’s a simple matter. He did not do anything worthy of drawing that flag. A it wasn’t even close.

Worked out well in the end for us though. I love how we went right back to Hutch.
