New Refrigerator Recommendations

Yay! Another anecdotal evidence thread!

That said we've had a French Door LG for 7 years. Works like a charm, no issues, would buy again in a heartbeat.

Its like cyclonefanatic wants to be the new CDC.

Bought a Frigidaire when the 15 yr/old Whirlpool died. Made in America, it is a bit noisy, but no issues.

I started noticing a noise coming from my Samsung refrigerator yesterday. This morning I saw that there was a little bit of ice buildup on the back inside panel and it didn't feel quite as cold.

I called a repair place that works on Samsung and they said that the repairs they try are not guaranteed to work because Samsung doesn't know how to solve the issue and gives the repair people a list of things to try. Apparently there is a class action lawsuit going on regarding this issue.

Update: repair guy said he could fix the issue but it would cost about $450 parts and labor and it would be about a week on the part. My fridge temp was recording 60 degrees on the top shelf so I'll have to throw everything out. Mine has an ice maker in the bottom, but if I had ice maker up top for the door, they wouldn't be able to fix it. I guess a $450 dollar repair is cheaper than $3,000 for a new fridge.

Advice: I wouldn't recommend Samsung.

This can be fixed and all you need is a piece of scrap copper wire a few inches long. It's a hassle but it fixed ours permanently. There are a bunch of videos on YouTube, but not many discuss the wire fix - most defrost and then wait for it to happen again in a few months or years. It's a pretty simple solution to a stupid problem - the drip tube freezes over because it's a refrigerator. Duh. Putting the wire down the tube, wrapped around the heating element prevents it from freezing over.

This one does show the copper wire. I didn't watch the entire video so I hope he provides good info.

If you already have to throw everything out, defrost the entire fridge before doing the fix.

I didn't know it was possible to hate a refrigerator until I had this one. It was always making some sort of noise. That all stopped when I "fixed" it.

Maytag (which has been owned by Whirlpool since 2006) side-by-side with ice maker and filtered water in the door. Have had it for 10 years and no problems. The water filters are a rip off, in 10 years the filters have cost around $700 and I get the filters online from a discount filter company.:(

MY Brother-In-Law has a Samsung with the ice maker in the door. Had the same problem you described and also found out it's unfixable. The fridge came with the house they bought a couple years ago, so not a huge loss, really; just no ice maker anymore.

Meanwhile our upgrade from the old white boxy Kenmore (great) to Frigidaire side-by-side (also great) has been very nice.

I asked the repair guy what he would recommend for brands based on what he's had to repair and he said Maytag had the fewest problems and was what he would recommend.

We bought a new Maytag washer and a new Maytag dryer when we bought our house and they will be 20 years old next July, with not one problem. Also a bit later we bought a Maytag microwave/range vent combo and it finally gave out 2 days ago after more than 18 years with no problems. I'll replace the microwave with the same brand but just an updated model.

The house came with a Maytag dishwasher and it's date code says it was manufactured in June 1978. That makes it over 33 years old. It has had no problems at all. So, we've had good luck with the Maytag brand (or maybe we just got lucky-who knows). The old commercial that "The Maytag repairman is the loneliest man in town" might be true! :D

I think you’ll be fine, go ahead and eat that food. No worries.

I have heard that the reason not many people work on LG or Samsung is the parts. I had an LG repairman tell me this. He said that they have to buy a whole bunch of parts at once since they all come from overseas and companies don't want to carry that much inventory at once for a lot of parts.
