***2021 Olympics thread***

There’s some good articles out this morning. Simone said she has what gymnasts call the twisties which is like the yips. Except that type of mental block could injury someone badly with the types of things she has to do.

it’s a bummer because she is so good and I wish she had the chance to win her second all around gold.

this is so ignorant. She literally could lull herself if she isn’t in the right space when performing her skills.

No need to criticize everybody. Mental health is something that 99.99% of the people don't understand (including those affected). It is hard to grasp what we don't understand.

This **** is so stupid. "Because of emotional problems" is so purposefully dense I shouldn't even respond.

Listen to what Nastia Liukin said about it. She, as someone whose been involved with gymnastics her whole life, could tell that Simone had some kind of mental block going on. That she was in her own head to the point she wasn't able to pull off what is typically fundamental and basic to her. And she even went as far as to say it can be somewhat common.

People act like Team USA had to forfeit the competition. She was allowed to be replaced. If she was in a place mentally where she couldn't perform at the level she needed to, and felt they were better served having her place taken by a teammate, how is that "quitting"? The woman has been competing in gymnastics her entire life, she knows if she has "it" that day or not.

So to your example, if Tom Brady suddenly forgot how to throw a football in the middle of the Super Bowl, yes I'd imagine he'd turn it over to his backup.

The think that's got to be really upsetting about Biles, is that she took the spot of someone who didn't make the team and could compete. If you were the first person not selected to the Olympic team, you've got to be fuming at this development.

except that's not what Biles did. She didn't warm up and say she just didn't have it to let her team know she wouldn't be able to go (could an alternate replace her, I'm not sure on rules there) Instead she did a terrible vault which cost her team several points considering how strong they are in vault and then said she couldn't go.

In your example, it would be like if Dustin Johnson teed up the first tee, yanked it three miles to the left and said I'm sorry guys I just can't do this, forfeiting the match.

Briles was stuck in a terrible spot with no good solutions, and completely imploding on all four apparatus just to try and fight through it would have been far worse both for her and for her team. She didn't make the right choice, the right choice very clearly would have been to ask out before the games started so that the US could replace her on the roster. She didn't make the worst choice, either. She made the one most people would make in that situation, to try and fight through it until she couldn't.

Just curious, How do you think quitting for mental health makes her better? I mean I have nothing against her for stopping. However, I think it takes some shine off her. She is still the greatest to ever do it, no doubt. If comparing her to other athletes, she didn't complete the task. Like I said I don't blame her. I am just saying Historically she does not measure up to other great athletes in other sports. LIke Serena Williams.

Would they be "fuming" if she had hurt her ankle on the vault and that was the reason she pulled out?

exactly. Hell, for all we know she told USA gymnastics she wasn’t right and they still took a shot from her.

The US is allowed only two qualifiers per apparatus and in the all around. Does Biles dropping out open up those spots or does the US just now have one qualifier for all those events?

For instance, I think Skinner had the fourth best vault at qualifying but couldn't make the finals because two on her team were better. Can she now be in the finals? I hope so.

Maybe @Clark is a massive women's gymnastics fan all 365 days of the year, but I wouldn't put money on it.

It's funny how do nothing nobodies who don't have any insight about what's happening are ******** and moaning about her not competing in a sport they don't even care about.

Yeah she is not going to be where she would be if she would have won the gold. That is a fact. She has less gold medals. In my opinion she fell off my personal athlete Mt Rushmore. I would replace her with Serena Williams. Simone broke mentally. Which is fine and I have broke mentally before as well. That is nothing against her as a person. I am just saying athlete wise.

But the thing is, Tom Forster and USAG have been depending on Simone too much for years. Dvora Myers had a great piece the other day breaking down this issue with the Team USA composition, and essentially why Forster sucked big time with some of his choices on who to name to the squad vs. what might have put more medals in contention for the US. I can only imagine the heat that Simone would have taken if she would have pulled out before the Olympics and given up her spot for someone else, considering how much pressure has been placed on her by USAG over the last decade.
