In Memoriam: Ames Business/Restaurants

Still is. I was there a couple of weeks ago. I enjoy their food.
Man, that was the best amount of cheap food for the price. My friends and I went there so often one semester we had to take the next semester off haha. The free rice was the kicker to the broke college lifestyle that always allowed you to leave with a box for another full meal. Problem was everyone who liked it knew when the new rice would come out during the lunch/dinner rush and if you were late you were SOL.

Glad to see they are still around, I knew there was a lot of construction and reno going on around that area, wasn't sure if they would survive it.

Its not.
I know.

Think the signage on the building reads “Flippin Jacks” and “Pancake House” or something like that. It appears they did a pretty substantial renovation inside and outside including new HVAC.

I will say that we eat there less now than we used to. I still enjoy it, and the food is largely the same (albeit more expensive) - but yes, it's not as homey as it used to be. It's more of a "girls night out" type of place, which is great! But just not the bar and grill it used to be. That sort of vibe seems to be sort of dying out in Ames, which is odd with it being a college town.

As long as the Tip-Top stays open Ames will always have a great dive bar. Is Whiskey River's food any good?

Wait, where is this pancake house? I have seen signage for a pancake house on an old rental house on 6 th just west of Grand. Guess they stepped it up.

In the former El Azteca location (Happy Chef before that) on SE 16th st.

Lafuentes 7 burritos for 7 dollar, pancheros next to cys roost 2 pound burrito at 2 am. Oh the memories
Two pound burrito left you like it was given to you. Might as well swallow a brick. Ate one as a joke during lunch, was worthless the rest of the day.

Love reading these threads on the old places. Our places from '78 to '82 were:
Dugan's for Tuesday Night Live.
That Place downtown
What's Under
Filmore/Mississippi Queen for live music
Torks for "take out", 85 cent quarts plus a quarter for a bag of peanuts.
I think it was called the Hallway at North Grande Mall for that shopping buzz.
And the M Shop.

I miss DaVinci’s. Worked there for a while—including in the middle of a VEISHEA riot.

Used to sit in the dining room after close and watch drunks from the bars across the alley get arrested. One time saw a guy try to run away from a particularly…”stocky” cop. He would have gotten away, too, if he hadn’t tripped over the painted center line on Chamberlain.

I winced when she jumped on him.

Tequila Tuesdays at the Hallway. There is a reason freshman shouldn't shouldn't go out midweek with Jrs and Srs. RIP my freshman GPA. (But damn it was fun!)

Did the M-Shop survive the Covid, or has it passed with the 21 yr old drinking rules. Live music there was good. Great place to "rehydrate" after donating blood in the great hall. Do they still have blood drives on campus?

In all my time down there I never once or knew anyone that went to the M-Shop. One of many regrets I have

Still miss me some Battle’s BBQ. Jimmy’s in Boone is about as close to it as you can get since he did manage the one in Nevada. I will always go there when in Boone and get a couple of bottles of sauce.

Check out sauceslingers.com for the real deal. I believe it’s on shelves at Ames Hy-Vees now, too

Still going strong, every semester booking a bunch of indies that I haven’t heard of, have no interest in, and that make me feel old. You missed out: it’s a terrible layout for live music, but the history and vibe more than make up for it. I don’t know this for a fact, but my guess is that they rely pretty heavily on SUB funding to stay open.

What is going into the space of the former KFC on Lincoln Way?
