The thread is talking about how horrible customers are in a humorous manner and I'm bringing up the other end of the encounter to show that it's not always the customer being a jerk.

I guess I'm not 'joking around' I'm having a discussion, but I'm not angry or upset.
I don't think you're right, Dave. I spent many years working retail and in my experience unless given a reason, even a part-time high school aged employee isn't going to go out of their way, unprovoked, to stir the pot with a customer. It's always for reasons unknown, a customer coming in hot. I used to not agree, but after my experiences, totally think it's ok for an employee to fight back a little if a customer is treating them unfairly.

That's when it helps to have a good manager who has your back.

I'm not excusing anyone being disrespectful or rude. I've been on the receiving end of those encounters, and unfortunately that's not my time, and I'm a representative of the company. If I don't like that arrangement I can choose to quit or say GFY and deal w/ consequences.

That said, I've been on the receiving end of customer service folks who really DGAS and it's apparent even though I'm not shouting at them about my rights as a customer.
For most, jobs like that are a means to an end. Something to do to pass time after school or between college classes while making a little cash. If they get fed up at one crap job making 11/hour they can quit and go work at the store across the street doing the same thing. I don't agree that employees should be able to say whatever they want whenever they want to angry customers, but there is a line and when the customer crosses it, they are almost always barking up the wrong tree. The retail system is broken, and the ones that need to hear the complaints never do. These companies don't want to invest in a competent, educated staff, but customers don't care, they just want to be heard, even if it's shouting at the 16 year old girl that might be a little more concerned about her upcoming ACT or college decision then making sure your groceries ring up correctly.

To clarify, not advocating or defending customers being jerks to minimum wage employees.

Problem is, and I've seen it and was probably guilty of it in my time, shift managers are told to "make it right" no matter how wrong the customer is. So a lot of times, back in the Hy-vee realm, the customer service associate might tell a customer "you're wrong" only to have the shift manager come over and tell the customer "you're right". Bend over is the overarching policy at Hy-Vee, or at least was at the stores I worked at, when I worked at them.

Why do next-to-minimum wage workers have to get punished by the Karen's of the world, when in reality most of the high dollar earners in retail are the 1% that never have to even talk to a customer face to face if they choose not to? Working retail and/or service industry blows and is a broken system.

I can remember working at Hy-vee one night and had a boomer-aged gentleman absolutely lose his sh** on me when I refused to return an item that he didn't buy at our store. Dropped several F-Bombs and gave me his sob story about how I was a great example at what was wrong with my generation, no respect for customers or making sure the customer is always right, blah blah blah. Yeah, I was making about 15 bucks an hour at the time, and he was screaming at me over $7.68. I was hopeful for a career with Hy-Vee at that point so I ended up bending over for him, but in hindsight if I could go back and do it again, I would tell him GFY. Jobs like that, and there are millions like it in retail, just simply aren't worth taking that kind of guff.
Here’s an idea, fire the ****** ones and replace them with robots. Everyone wins. Kid doesn’t have to listen to Karen and Karen can yell at the robot all she wants.

Yeah self checkouts are the future. I've noticed the Hy-Vee's here in Dubuque have like 15 self check stations compared to 5 person-manned ones now. Turning into Walmart, which I'm sure just tickles the boomers even more.

A lot of changes made based on need for the pandemic will end up the new normal. It will be interesting to see the domino effect.

"But but but the customer is always right!"
Whoever first uttered that phrase should be taken out back and beaten with sticks.
The customer is NOT always right. The customer is often completely wrong and an a-hole to boot.

A better rule of thumb would be "Try to accommodate reasonable requests."

95% of the time the customer is a freaking idiot that has absolutely no idea what they're talking about.

I don't care if that was a comedian and not a real IKEA employee - that was outstanding.

Don't get me wrong Dave, it's not cool to be a punk and not everybody is a Karen. But you're touching on the problem...everybody in the store is a minimum wage employee. How many times have you been at a supermarket or fast food and there are no adults in sight...just a bunch of kids making minimum wage managing other kids. It's no wonder the service sucks and also why his comment about the manager is so funny.

65 YO Boomer. I LOVE self checkout. No meaningless chit chat and nobody throwing the soap into the same bag with the butter.
