Otzelberger's First Recruiting/Transfer Class - FULL

Here's how my view has changed since Prohm was fired:
- TJ should be a candidate, but he'd probably be my 4th or 5th choice
- TJ would be fine, but I'd rather have Craig Smith
- So TJ it is, we know he can recruit, but can he actually coach? I'm skeptical.
- TJs putting together a nice staff. He's a young guy and he'll keep improving as a coach.
- JCL and RB leaving is probably for the best, just get Hunter locked up
- OK, we knew TJ could recruit, but given the short turnaround, getting the guys he's gotten, plus reaffirming the Hunter commitment, that exceeds my expectations

Now I'm pretty much of the thinking that a guy that has done so much in terms of assembling a staff and getting players in such a short period of time is such a grinder that I think he's going to apply that to every facet of coaching. Will ISU be good next year? I doubt it. Will TJ become a great coach? I don't know. But I'm not betting against a guy that is willing to grind like that.

it is fair to question TJ's hire (especially the process) and voice the opinion you outlined.
For those of us who supported the TJ hire the early returns have been very promising but that doesn't mean it was the right hire. It is to early to tell as you stated we need to see results on the court after a few years to actually do a victory lap.
The one thing I do think is TJ has re-energized the basketball fanbase more than any of the other coaches that were realistic targets and that after the past two years is a win for Cyclone Basketball and JP decisiveness on the hire.

No matter how any feels about the hire or his future, so far, TJ has done exactly what he said he'd do.

The only reason to be skeptical about TJ was because of what we didn't know. The knock we kept hearing was how his UNLV team performed this year. We all knew he could recruit, but we also know there's more to it than that.

I never thought that he would be a bad hire, but I just didn't know. And I figured that if Pollard wanted him and wanted him bad enough to not interview anyone else, that was good enough for me. But what really sold me on him was that I kept hearing he had a high motor and a relentless work ethic to go along with it. I've said it elsewhere, but those people, especially with his charisma, just don't fail. Ever. They're winners. His tenure here will be successful. Count on it.

I didn’t know what thread to put this in, but as it relates to TJ, what makes him such an effective recruiter?

Seems like most coaches say the same things and all likely use some creativity to some degree, what’s the difference with TJ?
From what I recall (if I’m remembering the right interviews), he does a marvelous job of relating to people. Whoever you are, wherever you come from.

It was the reason he was hired in the first place all those years ago, and he’s built the coaching acumen to go with it.

I don’t believe anyone is going nuts. I saw that video that DRob quoted on Twitter and thought I’d ask the question whether that was his son. He’s only 14 years old and he’s already 6’7”. I thought it was intriguing.
Can I ask why this was funny? Lol @Acylum

Really hoping for Cam’ron Fletcher. I know he is a bit of an unknown as he didn’t play much at Kentucky, but having a really athletic rim protecting wing would be awesome. Would love to see him, Hinson, and a healthy Foster on the floor at the same time.
TBH I’d be fine closing out the recruiting cycle with the two IHCC kids. There’s one guy everybody has in their projected starting lineups that scares me and I’d like to recruit over. If we can do that I think we have a chance to go .500 overall with sensible scheduling.

I may have taken the whole “keep an eye on” thing too literally. There are probably thousands of kids his age you could say we should keep an eye on. I don’t want to get into a lengthy “why did you rate my post this?” debate. I’ve always found those “junior high girl”ish and a waste of time. I’ve never asked anybody to explain their response to my post or engaged anybody who’s inquired about my response before. Probably won’t again.
