TJ also let some of Prohms players go because he wanted to build a culture of hard working team players.

I for one am EXCITED about what's happening in Cyclone basketball. I think we have a coach with a clear vision of where he wants to take the program and is aggressively building a roster to accomplish it. And, he's not afraid to pass on guys who don't fit the program, even if they can fill a stat sheet. I can't wait to see the team come together.

Say that his assistants are true teachers of the game to hit buzzword bingo.

That’s.........that’s how pretty much all recruiting works outside of blue bloods?

Good recruiters get good four year players and build a roster. Not get a good recruit every other year and each sticks around a year or two.

Blue bloods can get away with several one and dones, because they get multiple players of elite talent every year.

So he was a bad recruiter because THT and Tyrese didn’t stick around for four years?

Listen man, I think both of us are happy Prohm is gone. Personally, I think it happened a year later than it should have. But you can’t tout TJ as a great recruiter and say Prohm was a ****** one. Prohm was just an awful game day coach, didn’t have an offensive identity, didn’t coach hard defense and was terrible at adjustment. His timeout usage was suspect as well. There were a LOT of things that led to Prohm’s downfall, but I don’t think I’d list recruiting as one of them.

So TJ is a bad coach then? What would you call his UNLV teams?
I don't judge coaches off of two seasons at a rebuild. Most coaches are trying to build teams whereas he was trying to build a program. That's what I call it. Someone who is willing to take time to try and build things the right way. TJ is definitely still learning but you can see he is quickly adapting.

His first one was typical for a first year coach, and last year he wanted to blow up the roster and build it his way and the AD gave him permission. Similar to what he’s doing here. He just didn’t plan on leaving UNLV so soon. There’s a reason UNLV promoted from within after he left, as did his previous stop. UNLV offered him an extension when the Iowa State rumors swirled, but this is where he and his wife wanted to be.

So far I don’t have a reason to doubt him. Letting Bolton go would be tough for any coach. But he’s following the CMC blueprint and putting a huge emphasis on culture. Hard workers and players who want to be here.

I like that TJ brought in a young and upcoming guard coach who excels at offense, and a veteran post coach who excels at defense. I understand keeping Robinson to keep Hunter, Foster, and Hinson among others in the fold.

First rule is you always take the best talent and adjust around them.
Thant said I am on plan #1. I feel 4 starting spots are set PG-Hunter, SG-Gabe, F-Hinson, F/C-Foster. All indications are Hinson will be fine but is coming of a mysterious injury/sickness that caused him to red shirt. being off a year may take a bit to get back to his sophomore level of play. Right now in my mind SF is a weaker position than Guard. I feel Kunc and Javia would be better of the bench. Adding a starting SG/SF who can shoot the 3 and using the 2nd F/PF would as Hinson insurance would round out the team nicely in my mind.

I guess I am not sure how attractive ISU would be to a 1 year guard that would be better than Walker and Jackson are right now. Most guys transferring are looking to play and would be behind Hunter/Kalcheur. Also we can consider Lipsey is TJ's top target for '22. I am not sure the staff would want to add another guard with 2-3 years eligibility with the expectation Tyrese/Gabe/Tre/Walker will be here for 2 years.

I am a bit more
Below is an updated roster by position & class. It will be interesting the direction TJ goes with his last 2 scholarships.

The biggest question marks on the below roster for me are:
  • Do we have a back-up PG? I would like to think Walker is that guy, but he was very turnover prone as a freshman. He turned the ball over at a similar level as Bolton. Hopefully, that was freshman inexperience and rust coming off a HS senior year injury. Jackson has a PG build, but for some reason he struggled under Prohm. His dribble wasn't great, nor his passing.
  • Hinson's status. If he is healthy, he could be one of ISU's best players. He also gives ISU an long/physical perimeter player. Even if Hinson isn't healthy, I still like our wing shooters. Grill, Kalscheur, Johnson and Jackson all have potential to be 10ppg guys at the SG/Wing position.
  • Do we have 2 Big12 caliber post players. If Foster is healthy and he can guard Big12 stretch 4's- then I love our post flexibility and combinations TJ could play to create mismatches.
What our the current biggest roster composition risks?
  • If a newcomer can't play at a Big12 level?
  • If a players game doesn't fit TJ's system?
  • If a starter or key backup is injured?
IMO our biggest need is a guy who can play PG. That could be a traditional PG like Jacy Holloway. Doesn't need to be a big scorer, but a player who can run an offense and limit turnovers. OR a stud CG in the mold of Curtis Stinson. That would be ideal and Gabe could play the wing.

Our 2nd biggest roster risk IMO is post. I like a player like Payton at Indian Hills. He is a different type of player from our other 4 post players. Uber athletic, rebounding machine and plays in the paint.

Agree with trying to shoot for best available talent for last two recruits.

After that, close call but I will stick with bias towards getting another PG/CG. He doesn't have to be a guy who necessarily has to/wants to start, but a guy wants to play a fair amount and wants to help his team win. I think that makes most sense.

Walker is still unproven (I know most Fresh are), and Jackson has ?-marks also. Hunter is still a Freshman and cant' be relied on to play all the time. Then there is the injury risk. You just need one more proven guard I think.

Then go get the missing piece (starter-quality hopefully) at forward.

TJ knows Hunter's thought process best. If Tyrese wants to be THE man only, OK, but I would hope he would want better competition and help (even more than we have now) in the guard court.

For those that are interested MN reporter Darren Wolfson has a 10 minute interview with Gabe from last night roughly 29 minutes in. Very confident in his shot and he was respectful to the Gopher fans for leaving. He declines to actually say the reason for it though.
FWIW he mentioned a lot of ACC schools and schools form each P6 conference had interest. We know "interest" doesn't mean an offer but it does indicate he was very desirable to multiple staffs and props to the staff to getting him to Ames.
