Official Announcement of TJ as the New Iowa State Mens BBall Coach

Maybe the haters should stop. He’s the Cyclone coach now.
Everyone wants to assume they are right with this hire. Yes they are negatives and yes there are positives to the hire, but the fact is he is our coach and he wants to be here. He has had success bringing players to Ames and he has a lot of people saying positive things about him when they don't need to.

I'm super excited to see his staff in the coming weeks and see what players we retain and go after on the transfer market.

People like Otz, he's energetic, and he's passionate about ISU. If he surrounds himself with good support, there is no reason he can't be successful.

But he’s our friend and we know him better!

After reading your posts and seeing your arguments over the last several days, I think the answer to your, "WhoISthis" question, is you are Cat! He disappeared about the time I started noticing your name and your dislike of how JP handled the process.

I think Cat was okay with TJ, but had to change his name to go after JP with the thesis he is pushing as WhoISthis.

Do I win a prize? ;)

I've had some time to let my thoughts settle and keep finding myself feeling optimistic about the hire. I won't get too hung up on the hiring process or speculating how many coaches Pollard interviewed. Anything focusing on that topic will be based on speculation at best, so really what's the point? Jamie's job is a difficult one and he will definitely receive his fair share of judgement for this hire, but I'll withhold mine until I have sufficient results after the games are actually played.

That being said, I'm totally considering getting my season tickets back now that a coaching change has been made. Only problem is that in the two years since we last had tickets our family has grown by two and now I'll have to pony up for four seats

It's fun to actually feel some excitement again towards the mens basketball program!

This thread is a debacle. So let me contribute to it.

1. TJ wasnt the best available, imho. He wasnt my first choice. But some of the names discussed were never candidates either. E.g. Altman wasnt leaving his pac12 champs, infinite nike money job because he misses midwest winters ffs. The overall grasp on reality here was... low.

2. Ive hired dozens of people in my career. In hiring, one of the most important factors to consider is "does the guy want the job? Does he want to be here?" If some of those other candidates answer to that was "i guess so", "if the money is right", "well it would be a promotion" - those are not great answers. At least with TJ, he wants the job, wants to be here, wants to succeed. Thats literally half the battle. Ive hired a lot of smart people who didnt pan out because they just werent that into the job.

3. Unless you work in the AD, stop making claims about JPs process. He didnt interview anyone, TJ was the only candidate, etc etc. You are talking out of your ass. You dont know anything (neither do i). So stop making things up.

4. People hating on JP are idiots. He hasnt been perfect on everything, he has made some mistakes and i bet he is well aware of them. But he has sure af got the big things right. He increased FB attendance and revenue when we sucked and nationwide trends were down, that was a very clever but of work. He has managed the budget very well, built significant new facilities. He has really built the AD up from where it was. Not all of his hires have worked out, but that is the rule in hiring. He isnt above criticism, but overall the guy is one of the best anywhere.

5. I think joefrog is Bruce Van de Velde.

if you believe 2/3/4 how can you type the first sentence in #1??

If TJ is going to turn this around the team needs to show life by year 2. Which means they need to compete against teams in the upper half. Not necessary win but compete. Not lose by 25+ against Tech. If they are doing that then it shows to me the team has talent and they have an understanding of what the games plan is and executing it which also shows that TJ has the right staff to implement the turn around. If not and we get more of the clueless defense with aimless offense it shows me a lot of people were right and we hired another Prohm clone and we'll be looking another coach soon.
Other than Tech which is a terrible matchup for a team without a point guard - ISU did compete with but not win against the top teams this year. In conference play ISU lost by an average of 11 points a game to ranked teams. To ranked teams not named Tech that average was 7.6 ppg.

I think we need to see more than that.

He's our coach now and I will fully support him and hope he does succeed. Outside of ability, his biggest positive is attachment to ISU. If he really is "the guy", he'll get a statue because he'll have ISU as a perennial top 25 program that this fanbase and Hilton deserve, and will be paid well.

Am I still upset with JP? Absolutely. He should have just said we went after our guy, we got our guy, we're gonna win. Soon.

After hearing more about DeVries and his clear Hawkeye leanings, I am glad we dodged that one. We don't want McDermott 2.0 I would have preferred Craig Smith, but we have our coach now.

I was around for the BVDV years and when JP was hired. I was thrilled with the JP hire at the time.

I hope that Otz is smart enough to hire a very experienced former head coach that he trusts.

Let's get back to winning and making Hilton the nightmare it used to be for visiting teams.

I've been searching out various reactions from college basketball people and I think it reflects CF - very "meh". No one is saying its a terrible hire. No one is saying its a great hire. In fact, most national people were like "ISU hired TJ Otzelberger as expected" and moved on. We are a bit more passionate here on CF but that's pretty close to the average reaction.

I don't know why the pro-TJ people are pissed at the anti-TJ people, and vice versa. It wasn't an exciting hire. It was rushed and seemed wired to TJ the entire time. It may work out, it may not. But I think most fans DO have a problem with how Pollard conducted the search. But he's the AD and we are fans, so he gets to do things his way.

But he's the coach now and we'll all support him and hope he succeeds. We won't know if its a great hire or an epic failure for a few years so let's enjoy the ride and cheer like hell for him.
