I look at it differently. If UNLV was willing to waive its buyout, ISU would have announced TJ as it head coach by now. If UNLV feels that ISU wants TJ bad, they can negotiate from a position of strength and get the FULL buyout.

Plus they can take the ISU buyout money and use it to buyout Pitino, Martin, or any possible existing head coach. Or use it to bump up what it can pay annually to attract a big name.
Excellent point, but Iowa State is not powerless in this. If Iowa State doesn’t take TJ and UNLV has to let him go, they pay TJ money they can’t lavish on Pitino. Best case (with my Cardinal colored glasses on) is a mutual win: Iowa State gets what they want, and UNLV gets the kind of slimy coach they so desperately desire.

(Honestly though, what you wrote makes a lot of sense. )

I don’t think it’s that complicated. I’m guessing the plan was always to do a press release tonight and press conference tomorrow.

But letting the news get out before a deal is reached on the buyout jeopardizes the deal. It creates pressure to get TJ out of town so you can start your own search, which can be used by Pollard as leverage. And it definitely seemed like the news broke from UNLV's athletic director's office.

Maybe they just wanted word to get out so that any available coaches interested in an opening there do not jump at one of the early openings in this first wave of hires after the season.

There is a third scenario that is low odds happening. That is TJ has enjoyed his time in UNLV and so uses the ISU offer to leverage for more money to stay there. In which case ISU is looking at other coaches.

I look at the negotiation like a game of poker and its Jamie vs. UNLV's AD. Who's bluffing and who has the stronger hand? I guess we will find out how bad Jamie wants TJ.

If UNLV's AD can jettison TJ and get $3M, she is the big winner.

Sorry, I shouldn’t have been so vague. ISU representatives were waiting on a flight from OKC to DSM that had Gibbs on it to land so they could be at the airport waiting to pick him up.

Sources close to the situation have confirmed that Pollard and Gibbs were unable to reach an agreement today. Apparently they weren’t on the same page as far as pay, which makes sense because I would imagine Jamie is wanting to bring in someone for less money.

However, my sources have told me Jamie is zeroing in on his guy and an announcement is expected by Monday, potentially even as early as this weekend.

Maybe TJ leaked the news and now waits to be fired by UNLV so as to escape the buyout.

Gibbs wanted $7.55 an hour and Jamie wasn’t having any of it
