Report: T.J. Otzelberger headed for Iowa State

2 buyouts make this one hell of an expensive hire

steve prohm shouldnt make us buy him out after this season if he has any moral compass

big 12 plays impatiently historically, would have liked to see a counter to that but its so damn risky, even if u get moser can he recruit

tj is the safe hire and continues the brand of basketball that pollard is trying to develop, kind of like what wisconsin does with their brand of basketball

and why was campbell so brilliant, he was counter the impatience of the big12 who could recruit and develop
This has to be a bot account.

A contract is a two sided agreement, and has nothing to do with a moral compass. I wouldn't have expected ISU to forego their compensation if Coach Prohm had been hired away for another job.

It's entirely possible and maybe likely that TJ came for an interview and a UNLV guy took that to mean he was offered and the job. UNLV is still saying it's still "speculative" at this point.

Are we hey saying speculative (which to me sounds like they admit they are guessing) or are they saying it’s just not finalized.

Sniff sniff.....as someone mentioned earlier, this smells like Rob Jeter. If I remember right, he was unofficially our coach for a few days?

So, assuming it is TJ, can someone who has watched him at SDSU or UNLV give some analysis on what his teams' identity is like? I'm hoping for improvement in any of the following (maybe even more than one, just trying not to be greedy!): rebounding, defense, ball security, offensive sets, shot selection, shot making, clock management, player management, etc.

I’ve been told they are really great at all of those.

The comparison isn’t TJ vs prohm. It’s TJ be the field.

He has strengths. I think those strengths are overstated. But, again, I don’t know him.

Honestly, it comes down to wanting some fresh blood around here.

Jamie said yesterday that basically it’s going to take a while to turn things around. So if that’s true what does TJ bring that someone else doesn’t.
I think he meant that Prohm's plan to turn things around was a several year process. He never specifically said that the rebuild with a new coach would take a while. He wasn't really clear though so it could be taken both ways.

We have a pre-season top 10 football team, facilities finally competing with other schools. Am I overly excited by the hire? Not really. But it's insane to me to trash Pollard. Guy has done more for ISU athletics than the past 2 ADs combined. And still has even more plans for facilities. He knows more than any of us how big his hires are. I trust him.
He just fired an 0-18 coach two years after extending him. We couldn’t do worse this past year. It’s fair to say he’s as blind as anyone here in MBB.

Jamie came at the right time for an average AD to look better than they are. He’s not Prohm inheriting Hoiball bad, but we’ll be just fine without him

Ha! I don’t even want TJ but that would be very ****** of us.

So is everyone really mad at the TJ hire or that they feel robbed of the two week long spectacle that a coaching search brings? Flight trackers and speculation are huge fun on the message boards. If Pollard would make the assistant coach search a circus, would that make folks happier?

Just pull off the bandaid.

I look forward to the press release with some great quotes from former players Matt, Georges, and Naz singing the praises of TJ. I’m sure it will make it seem like he’s recruited every good player that’s ever come here. And hell that’s not far off.

There will probably be some quotes from his former bosses—successful Creighton coach and failed iowa state coach Greg McDermott. Successful Iowa state coach and failed nebraska coach, Fred Hoiberg. Failed Washington state coach, what’s his name, maybe even failed Iowa State coach Steve prohm!

WTF is wrong with you? No matter who we hired you would have just continued to b!tch. Doesn't it get exhausting?

Hey, based on FlightAware it might be John Groce from Akron. Making less than half a mil. You never know...:jimlad:
Please no, I rather have TJ.

I did see Dana Ford mentioned from flightAware. Which like TJ gives me "could do better, could do worse vibes"

Which boils back to the point, TJ is ours if we want him. Why not conduct a coaching search and if we get outbid or no one wants the job go back to TJ?

You may be right. I definitely understood him to mean it was going to be a long process for the new guy.

I’ll be excited when the former players are interviewed about him!

As long as CMC has the football program winning. Pollard is 100% safe. Pollard wanted to hire this guy 6 years ago. So let's give TJ a shot.

I really would like to see TJ assemble an impressive bench of coaching talent like @ChrisMWilliams talked about in his podcast with Blum.

All this bitc**** will stop if TJ keeps Hunter and reloads the roster by summer (which he has proven many times over to be capable of bringing in talent to Ames)

Also, WAY too many people are calling CSP a good recruiter. He had a couple really good finds. But 75%+ of the guys he brought to Ames ended up being complete busts. That's not a good recruiter. That's luck

A couple of things. JP keeps things close to the vest in coaching searches we all know that. Reports have come out before in hires that weren’t true (good or bad).
On TJ- he does have something that is often over looked, he has an intense desire to be successful here. He is very invested in Iowa State and know the place well. Obviously his wife played for Bill and his past coaching duties here. Anytime you do something with great passion and investment it is different than “working”, much different. If he gets the job I trust he surrounds himself with a quality bigs coach, defensive coach, and offensive coach.
