Report: T.J. Otzelberger headed for Iowa State

Since it’s not been confirmed by any schools this is a very curious situation. You know what that mean? Conspiracy time.

I don’t think we have hired TJ yet but I think we set up an interview. TJ told his players and ad staff that he was going to interview. The. Somewhere along the way a game of good ole telephone is played and gets leaked that he has the job. That’s just my tinfoil hat theory. The only other reasonable one would be the lizard people are behind this.

No, I'm guessing the ones who already want him gone will be the first ones to want him fired when he loses a few games.

No......but I would appreciate him not getting half a decade of Charmin just because of who he is. Which....to ISU's embarrassment is exactly what JP signaled. I hope I am wrong and JP did the set up and will wow us with a name. Otherwise..............

If he told his players and staff he was interviewing, then he isn't smart enough to be a head coach. I'll guess he didn't.

I'm thinking he's the 3rd best coach in the conference now.

Well, Self, Huggins, and Kruger all have resumes far better and longer than TJ's. I would think many programs across the country would love to have Beard. Boynton impressed with the progress he made this season, although Cunningham will likely be gone next year. I'd definitely rank Drew ahead of TJ right now, considering he has the #3 team in the nation. That leaves Weber, Shaka, and Dixon. Pretty tough to rank TJ anywhere with nothing to compare him to.

Nobody can seriously argue that saying in the morning you're beginning a search for a new coach and hiring somebody that evening does not cast a cloud over the seriousness of the process. Maybe JP cannot control how information gets out in Las Vegas but he should have at least anticipated the possibility. It definitely makes JP look bad, and I'm a big fan of his tenure here.
What does it matter if it looks bad? He will be judged by the success of the hire regardless. We won't know that for a while. Nobody will GAF about the optics except sports journalists. They are insufferable anyway and can suck a fat one.

He’s a fit right now.
  • The program just went winless in conference, it can’t be much worse
  • Covid blew a hole in the athletic dept budget
  • Other high-profile openings in the Midwest (Indiana, MN)
  • He comes relatively cheap until he proves himself
  • He has deep ties to ISU and wants to be in Ames
  • He proven success recruiting to Ames

Let’s stop using the two bolded. By all reports, we are paying $5+ million for Prohm’s buyout around $4 million for TJ’s (exact number will eventually be released as both are public universities). So this whole “we don’t have any money because of COVID” schtick can be put to bed.

I’m fine with hiring TJ. I’m not fine with him bring the only target AND us overspending for a guy no one else wants. If the UNLV buyout ends up at $3-4 million, that’s significant $$$ that we could have used to lure a more proven head coach.

Name hires don't do anything for me. Chizik was the biggest "name" hire in my lifetime and he was a complete disaster. Then again Hoiberg worked out so who knows....

Those numbers won't be close to right FWIW

Pollard is a real piece of work. He plays Iowa State fans as loyal, mindless sons with always open wallets and gets away with it. He must have balls the size of a basketball.

I don’t agree with this. Pollard has done amazing things for ISU but his blind spot is his ego. He probably thinks he’s smarter than everyone else by making this move. I hope he’s right, this is a massive hire for the basketball program.

Wow! I go to bed for a good night's sleep and BAM wake up to 42 pages in less than 12 hours. How can anyone wade through so much? ... just to catch up. I'd love to hear a 'summary' of what's transpired.

Not to mention, that we are financing the one-time debt that we got due to covid and an incredibly low interest rate.
