Report: T.J. Otzelberger headed for Iowa State

IF true.....this'll either be a brilliant hire and we got a friend's/family discount......or could reek of "hiring a friend" failure and many would lose some confidence in JP.

If it’s TJ, I’m underwhelmed to say the least but I’m ready to give him a shot. Hard to imagine he gets us in worse shape than we are right now.

I agree with the underwhelmed part. However not getting us into worse shape shouldn't be the bar. My 18 year old in her first year at Ames who is in the top %2 of her freshman class could meet that criteria. Might as well hire her......she could use the money. And I doubt TJ has any more love or passion for the university than her.

Question for those who aren't happy if it's TJ. Would it change your mind if he brought on staff that consisted of someone like, oh Nate Loenser or maybe Danny Manning?

No, I have no idea what nepotism is - I just used it randomly in a few posts without knowing what it means. Are you serious right now? It's favoring friends or family which could take the form of something like offering them a job but not exclusive only to getting someone a job. It's not only for family by the way, even though the actual root of the word deals with it.
Are Jamie and TJ related?

If he waited a week and still hired tj, it would look like a bunch of people turned the job down, so he had to do it now
First, no, that’s a false dilemma.

Second, what is bad about getting turned down? It’s no worse than going straight to the family friend, .500 MWC contingency candidate.

what are you talking about? Tj knows the right people, that’s EXACTLY how it works in the real world

No, that's just how it works in the real world when any form of corruption (yes, i know a powerful word) is at play. If you pride yourself on being some moral high character like JP, you shy away from it. I'm not saying it's going to always end poorly but it's an unfair practice.

JP is putting himself on the line here. If TJ fails their fates might be linked. CMC has obviously been incredible and JP’s vision for Iowa State has been amazing, but hiring a buddy without much of a process and having him fail would be a bridge too far for me. That would mean he’d hired 1 basketball coach who succeeded and 3 that failed, with 1 being a nepotism-type hire. How many ADs are hiring their 5th basketball coach in their tenure? For all of our sakes I hope TJ succeeds.

It’s obvious TJ was not a “contingency”. This was his job as soon as it were to come open.

If this is truly the hire I am disappointed we did not hold a broader search for the job. TJ was assistant under GMac, Fred, and Prohm and hasn't exactly had that great of a run at UNLV so seems like we are just dipping back into the familiar with the hire if it is TJ instead of changing the direction of the program with someone more proven and doesn't already have ties to ISU. To literally turn around 24 hours after letting Prohm go and this is the hire you make, I sure hope this story proves to be wrong and premature rumors. Would be one of the few times I have been disappointed with Pollard if this was the hire he had in mind all along.
