Coaching Search: Place your bets

Would anyone say TJ would even be a consideration with no ISU ties? Honestly? As for a perfect candidate, um.....

He was at Nebraska for a couple years and they weren't good. And he has been to exactly one NCAA tournament. You right he didn't have the career scoring leader of Utah State carrying him his first two years, it was only the guy that is second in career scoring, second in assists, 1st in FT%, won the conference player of the year award and was honorable mention AP all American. They actually would have been even better his first year if he could have convinced Koby McEwen not to transfer.

Not saying Smith wouldn't work out here but he isn't a perfect candidate either.

Every single candidate both named and unnamed is going to have a flaw or two. Matta has health issues; Beilein is in his 60's, ditto for Altman. Gates (whom I otherwise I really like) has been a head coach for only two years. TJ is shaky on the X's and O's. Even Fred might not be able to capture the same magic the second time.

At this point, unless Coach K decides to retire in Central Iowa after coaching a program he had the chance to coach back in the early '80's (when ISU hired Orr), I don't think there is a potential coach that is going to really unite the fan base.

Since everyone posting on CF these days is a certified college basketball coaching search expert, time to share your knowledge. Answer the following....

Who do you WANT to hire? (Craig Smith)
Who do you think we WILL hire? (TJ)
Who do you definitely NOT want to hire? (Hoiberg)

Go!
I'll go with an off- the wall pick. Dan Majorle: played in the nba 14 years, head coach at Grand Canyon Univ for a bit. Would be able to sell nba connections and has head coach experience. From Michigan so knows the midwest some.

He seems like the kind of guy that wouldn’t enjoy temps under 85°.

Wasn't Dana's name swirling around for the ISU job previously?
Yes, in 2015. Toward the end of the search, after it was rumored Leath didn't want JPs pick (TJ) because he didn't have coaching experience, there were rumors that Altman and Greg Marshall were two last minute, swing for the fences candidates. Whether that was JP reaching out to them, or them reaching out to Iowa St, is not certain. Either way, the price tag was too high (IIRC like 3.5 millon), so JP went with Prohm.

$3.5m = Prohm‘s salary plus his buyout spread out

sigh

He’s used us for new contracts every opening since McDermott.

Exactly! He just singed a new one in 2019

" His salary will be $2.9 million next season, $3.225 million in 2020-21, $3.525 million in 2021-22 and $3.775 million annually from 2022-23 through 2025-26. "

I really doubt he wants to take a pay cut to coach at ISU and we can't compete with Phil Knight for endowing a coaching salary

I would hope Gates, Medved and Hoiberg are at the top of the list. I would understand not being able to afford Fred, but if the other two are interested, they seem to clearly stand out to me.
