Coaching Search: Place your bets

I think Jamie is a good business man and knows that there is only one man out there who will immediately put butts in the seats and that man resides in Lincoln, Nebraska.

do you think hornacek would be able to put butts in the seats? only problem is him and jp have supposedly issues also.

TJ is definitely my second choice. Instant recruiting upgrade. Craig Smith can bring his system here all he wants. Nothing good is going to happen without hitting the ground running in recruiting.

Assistants do a ton of the recruiting. Craig Smith can coach, let the assistants do most of the recruiting. If you get good recruiters. Craig Smith is the better coach between him and TJ>

Read the long post. I'll provide a shorter version here. He has seen what works at Iowa State. He has extensive P5 experience which I think is a big deal for me. He has basically the stereotypical resume of what it takes to be successful here IMO.

Before this year I would have taken him pretty much no questions asked. I thought he was the better choice when we hired Prohm and he had done nothing, but further that opinion every year before this year. He was extremely successful in keeping and expanding on the success at SDSU. He took over a harder situation than I think people give credit. Nagy had been there 20 years and was that program. He took UNLV to 2nd place in his first year. Even in his first "bad" year they were still competitive and show promise. It has given me pause in that I think you need a full search, but I think it maybe gives us a buy low opportunity as I still think he will be a P6 coach in the next couple of years.

The other candidates have their own flaws. DeVries has coached at two places ever and only P6 experience. Smith has some P5 experience but only a couple of years and at Nebraska. Nagy has only a couple of years P5 experience 30 years ago. Matta and Beilein are to expensive and to old for me. I just am not seeing anyone who is clearly better. There are alternatives, but I don't think anyone is clearly better.
Maybe I’m in the minority, but I haven’t been impressed at all by UNLV in the five or six games I’ve watched this season.

Little bit of credit to him there: In his second year, Nebraska had one of the best seasons in their history. He left after that year to be head coach at South Dakota, and Nebraska went back to being terrible.

I haven't really watched them at all this year. I was impressed last year the couple of times I watched them. I think they've been really hit with Covid and injuries just like Iowa State. The difference there is they didn't have a history of bad years and they still finished mid pack in their conference.

I think people forget that the reason Prohm is likely fired is because of how bad we were this year. If they had won like 3-4 conference games and won most of the non conference games he would absolutely be back.

How so? In relation to negatively effecting Fred's ability to succeed.

I think the biggest thing is Fred was one of the first coaches to recruit heavily using the transfer pipeline. He had some of his best players come from other schools. It was a new concept back when Fred was HC. Now the college game is flooded with transfer players each year. He would be facing more competition when going after quality transfers this time around.

I am not saying Fred could not succeed this time around, he will just face some new challenges.

He’s so good at it now that he identifies transfers that could help bring in good players in the future.

Regardless of Covid or injuries, I just think Pollard would have a tough time selling the fan base on a new head coach coming off a losing season in a weak Mountain West Conference.

He only needs to sell the money people and the money people won’t have a hard time being sold.

More competition, but also way more transfers, and less stigma associated with transfers, which means more opportunities.
Plus, other than Royce, I wouldn't say any of the transfers he brought in would be incredibly sought after by the big programs. And even with Royce, he was recruited by Kentucky, and still picked a struggling program, because of Fred.

Ignoring the results of that game, just from the little bit I watched it looks like Craig Smith’s offense flows much better than TJ’s. TJ’s offense looks very similar to Prohm’s...
I'll be the first to admit I don't watch alot of UNLV or Utah State basktball but TJ gives me an AAU coach vibe while Smith seems like a great teacher/leader who can build a program.

Greg left Fred a lot of really key pieces in retrospect. The cupboard was not bare when Fred came. Time will tell if the new coach has the same luxury as Fred. Maybe Hunter is the next's guys Melvin Ejim, hard to know.

Melvin was already committed. So Fred had one of the all time best players in our history on the roster. That helps with a rebuild.

Scotty was also only a Junior in Fred's first year and was a big piece in the Royce White year the year after that. Also a huge help.

Diante Garrett was here and was amazing that first year. Now he was only here one year, but it showed what a good player could do in Fred's system and it helped us be pretty competitive for a lot of those games. ISU was bad in Fred's first year, but a lot of those games were at least competitive.

Then going into the Royce year...he still had Melvin and Scotty. Two huge pieces to go with Royce. If he didn't have those two, things might have gone quite differently for Fred in his time here.

Now hopefully....Hunter or Foster can be this coaches version of Melvin....maybe Bolton could be Diante Garrett and help us be competitive next year...and then maybe Hinson can be a guy that can help out for a couple years. Just need a few pieces to give hope for the next couple years, give the new guy time to build, and bridge to a new cycle of recruits and a couple key transfers.

How differently would Ejim be thought of if Prohm had replaced Greg? Would Scotty be like Bolton this year, an off-guard filling in at pg, asked to do things he can’t do as a pg?

The next coach needs to be much better at utilizing their roster than we’ve had the last several years
