Fire at Ross Hall

I am actually a huge fan of all those brutalist style buildings from the early 70s. I love how soviet it all felt. But it could get hella stuffy in some of those rooms in Ross. I took a Shakespeare class, that business communications class and I think the "career building" class that I failed the first time around due to attendance policies. I missed an entire week because I was flown for 2 different interviews and you can't miss 3 classes. The stupidest thing was that I missed practice interviews that week. I tried to cause a semi ruckus about it but the dean's office wasn't hearing it.

That Shakespeare class was actually really fun with a good professor. I think I had to read almost every play 1 or 2 a week plus some sonnets and I think I was the only non English major in there. The professor would dress up as a character from the play occasionally. She actually made me enjoy Shakespeare. It counted as a diversity and inclusion credit and by the time I was signing up for classes, the others were mostly all taken. So I said **** it and was planning on dropping it if it was really bad. Turned out to be one of my favorite classes in college. Also a really cute girl in that class baked me a cake for my birthday. Love isn't real though so it didn't work out.

I remember the class I had there. English 314 with Brian DeWall. IIRC he had like an Indiana Jones type of hat.
He showed us a framed article of a story he had published in Playboy and said it was a really, really big deal to get an article in the mag. No joke. From what I remember he was a good professor.

I’ve always heard that it was supposed to have a few more floors, but they ran out of money
The story I've heard is that as they were building it, they realized adding the last two floors would block light into the greenhouses in front of Horticulture Hall. No idea if that's true, but seems plausible.

Fire started in a custodial closet on the first floor of Ross Hall. Iowa State University Police and Ames Fire Department responded around 6:08 a.m.. Fire was out by 6:45 a.m. Police say there was one person inside the builidng at the time who made it out safely. There is smoke damage throughout the building and the investigation is ongoing.

Ross Hall fire

Ross Hall will be closed on Monday, Feb. 22, due to a fire. Classes scheduled to meet in the academic building will move online or to another location. Instructors will notify students of alternate arrangements. Students please check your email and Canvas for updates. Please avoid the area as police and fire officials investigate and continue to work around Ross Hall.

I was just going through old emails because I remembered having a class there in a room with windows. Turns out it was also 314 with Brian DeWall. I don't remember mention of a Playboy article but I do remember him being odd. Biggest thing I remember him being a stickler about was calling it Iowa State University of Science and Technology because that's what it says on the seal.

I worked as a cyclone aide and for admissions. This was the “fun fact” about Ross on our tours.

Only class I had in there was some lower level required english class, it was in the basement. The class was ok, the room didn't matter just go and do your work, leave after 50 minutes, wasn't that big of deal.

Pretty much the same here. Had an English class (maybe 302) and some other Mgmt class in Carver to finish my ISU career during the first summer session. Only good thing is they were cake classes and I was done in the morning every day. This was 20 years ago, so campus was really dead in the summer. My responsible friend and roommate was gone most of the summer working on an internship. My completely irresponsible friends stayed in Ames that summer. There's a strange mix of awesome and sad getting lit mid-week in an empty campustown as your college days end.
My last summer there I was the only one in my duplex that stayed the other two did grown up things like work. Had a few friends that stayed and made a bunch more from the Ag 450 Farm that summer. Nothing better than a afternoon getting smashed after 450 at the bar just to the west of Kelly along South Dakota.

I really doubt I can remember the specific classes. For the longest time I had memories of going to a small old building where one of my Profs had an office jammed right next to Carver. Then going by the area in recent years I had convinced myself I was remembering wrong and there's no way a building was tucked in there, but sure enough:

As a grad student, Ames during the summer was the best. A lot less traffic and I never had to wait in line to get into a bar.

Am I the only one that saw the thread title and though we had a coach named Ross Hall and we should fire him. Then immediately re read and noticed Ross Hall is on fire?

As a (now) resident, I've spent way more time on the ISU campus in the Summer than I ever did when I lived in town as a student!

What a beautiful campus in the late Spring and Summer. And if you time your walks right, there's virutally no one else out. It can feel like you have almost the entire campus to yourself. In previous years, my daughter (now 6) enjoyed going into the buildings (the unlocked ones -- her favorites were the Library and Curtiss -- but Ross was her 3rd) and "pretending to teach" in the various lecture halls, whiteboards, etc. :)

I really missed it last year, because (I have still yet to figure this out with Covid..) there were constantly more people on campus last summer than previous years, so we didn't go onto campus very often.

But back to Ross...I had a few classes there; wasn't my favorite building, but was probably the one that has/had the most "school smell" too it if you know what I mean....So I always enjoyed that.

Ross and Heady Halls are hideous. I'd love it if they were replaced.
Heady was a lot nicer inside when I was there two years ago. Had done a lot of updates. Heck, first class I had was in LeBaron and when I looked at it at that time it was totally remodeled. They should have left that alone so new students could be scared silly like I was with the crammed seats, lap boards, no air and a legally blind woman as a biology instructor.

Similar experience for me. I did stay on campus both my Junior and Senior years though and I absolutely loved campus and taking summer classes. The campus was so beautiful during the early summer months and as others have said, just such a laid back feel. I also had most of my classes in Ross and yeah, it wasn't much.
