Fire at Ross Hall

Got an alert at 6:30 this morning that there is a fire at Ross and to avoid the area. Anyone have any more details? They appeared to be doing some renovations a few weeks ago on the first floor entrances, so I'm curious if that's where it started.

Update: got an alert just now (7:30) that the fire is out and cleaning is under way. Ross Hall will be closed until further notice. Please avoid the area.

Oh, man - so much woodwork in there, too. I hope everyone was okay.

My dad always said those type of buildings were built to be easy to protect during student riots of the 60s. Not sure if true.

Maybe, but I think Ross was built or finished in 1974.
I always took it as, well, kinda cheaply done. Function over form, for sure, but only kinda functional, and mostly just bleak and stark.

More recent updates made the building a lot brighter and less dingy. That was good to see.

Maybe nam then? Or my dad is full of ****, either is possible

It is basically a grey fortress with smallish windows, so I guess I could see that for sure.

It was honestly a fairly depressing building. It's telling that women would usually go hang out in the bathrooms' lounge areas for someplace with a tiny bit of comfort and personality.

Constructed in '73

Stairways are super narrow, and not very conducive to current social distancing guidelines.

It was. It wasn't exactly as stark as we'd show Soviet architecture to be, but it seemed like an American version of that.
The basement Vendoland really needed more light, even after the upgrades. Really, the basement in general needs some work and personality. That seems pretty common across campus, though. I'm sure it's like that at other campuses, too, but the Ross basement is stark.

I would agree - there was a tiny bit more lipstick on the pig, but not much.

I honestly don't even remember the Vendoland, as it made so little impression on me. I do remember vividly the taxidermy animals up in the History levels (I think it was), however. That was... odd.
