Campbell on Hot Mic

Guys, both that call and the offensesides were correct. This isn’t HS, the player has to be across during the snap, make contact, or cause a lineman to move. The lineman across from the second one should have slapped him on the head and gotten the call.

the only issue I have with the offsides non-call is Soehner was literally jumping around on one of the Sooner jumps so it was either offsides or false start. Last time I checked you can’t do that.

edit: I just rewatched, it was Kolar

He jumps and points from the other side of the formation. That should be a flag. Pointing is fine...the linemen do it all the time...jumping out of a set stance should have fulfilled a false start with the opponent in the neutral zone.
May have to go and check it out. I believe you, but just curious myself since I didn’t look there. That should have been flagged then.

The target call was debatable, and the offsides call is made in many games I've watched. Even if CMC thought the calls met the strict interpretation of the rule, I thought he was letting the refs know--"Don't call this game in Oklahoma's favor because they are just playing little 'ole Iowa State.'. Good coaches work the officials and make sure things are not going to go one sided. It was a big game obviously, and CMC was not going to tolerate it. Johnny Orr was the master at this.

Id like a better definition of "forcible contact" for tackles that were clearly not that because the defenseless player dropped into contact at the head or neck area- the defensive player was clearly not initiating it.
Writing the words "forcible contact" into the rule really doesn't make much sense to me.

This is football. If every contact isn't forcible contact, you're doing it wrong.

I'm cool with Campbell going nuts. But I think you are interpreting his intentions a bit more the way you want it to be.

I don't think there was any method behind it. He was pissed and he got mad. He doesn't do that and I think he doesn't want to do that. We've seen him lose his **** one other time (against Kansas State in 2017). I bet it will be another 4 years before we see it again.

Correct, which is why the rule is dumb as ****. Stoops just went down, no fault of his, but Young is going into what would’ve been a good tackle had he not.
The thing that drives me absolutely nuts is a receiver catches a ball ducks his head as contact comes and turns what would’ve been a textbook tackle into targeting. In those cases the receiver should absolutely be penalized. If you really want to change dangerous behavior eject receivers for that.

But I’m not sure it’s about safety, or about appealing to dumb fans that think a glorified 7 on 7 competition with an 84 point over under is good football.

Could be, he may have just lost his cool. But I tend to think there is always method behind what CMC does.

I think Sean McDonough said it best on the broadcast - that is was definitely targeting by definition of the rule. And that the rule needs changed.

I get what they are doing but to kick someone out for a bang-bang non-malicious hit while letting someone rip Purdy’s face mask off his helmet is BS “player safety”.
Or rip the helmet off altogether...
