Campbell on Hot Mic

CMC had every right to be pissed off. The penalty and the ejection on the second play of the game had a big impact on the tenor and tone of the early part of the game for Iowa State.

Question for people that know the rules.

If it was hitting a defenseless receiver then is it a 15 yard penalty without an ejection?

If it was targeting then the ejection, if it was upheld.

Evidently, the referee told Campbell during the commercial break the penalty was for hitting a defenseless receiver. Not arguing about a penalty, but if it was hitting a defenseless receiver, why would the ejection stand?

I do know you could hear audible f bombs all broadcast from the stands or sidelines.

I think Sean McDonough said it best on the broadcast - that is was definitely targeting by definition of the rule. And that the rule needs changed.

I get what they are doing but to kick someone out for a bang-bang non-malicious hit while letting someone rip Purdy’s face mask off his helmet is BS “player safety”.

defensless receiver comes into play of targeting.

note 1 point 3. Note 2 point 2.

by the definition it was targeting. Doesn’t make it a good rule, but it is the way it’s written.

Guys, both that call and the offensesides were correct. This isn’t HS, the player has to be across during the snap, make contact, or cause a lineman to move. The lineman across from the second one should have slapped him on the head and gotten the call.

Exactly. All we had to do was 1) snap the ball or 2) jump. Those two things would lead to an offsides penalty. Also, we easily picked up the first down after it so I’m not sure why people are so focused on this...

Id like a better definition of "forcible contact" for tackles that were clearly not that because the defenseless player dropped into contact at the head or neck area- the defensive player was clearly not initiating it.

i agree. It’s like they only watch in slow motion.I remember earlier this year Young pulled up on a hit like that and got hurt.

football is a violent game. I’m not saying it’s safe, I don’t think it can be, but people know what they sign up for

Frankly, that's about where I'm at anymore with it. Get rid of all incidental ejections for contact like this because 1.) football is inherently not safe, and 2.) it's not consistent in application or mission anyway. Why is cranking a guy's head around 120 degrees at the facemask any safer? No ejection there. Why can declared runners lower their helmets and lead with the crown without any penalties? Linemen make helmet contact every single play, and they're known to develop tons of issues related to brain damage later in life.

These rules just don't make sense in the context of how football is played. Player safety is always important, certainly, but how willing are you to keep altering core aspects of the game to create a pretense of a safer game?

I would actually say Kolar, though in the backfield, false started by jumping while the defender was in the neutral zone.
