Bowl Game

Yes, remember, blowing out Northwestern is what gave us the name Cyclones in the first place. Wouldn't mind witnessing a repeat of that.

Bowl projections are one thing that's really hard for me to gauge accurately, but at this point I do think Alamo bowl would be the worst case scenario.
With Texas hovering, that always makes me nervous for any Texas location.

with OSU likely out, b12 could back door playoff spot. We beat wvu and Oklahoma and I’d imagine that #4 spot is ours. Would be notre dame, Clemson, bama, us or Oklahoma.

I love the enthusiasm, all I can think of is the Louisiana loss hurts a lot!

Cytown might not be too far off here. Still lots of football left, and if Ohio State is out, that is a major factor. Everyone just sort of assumes they will have a spot as long as they are able to be there.

Two comments:

Everyone loves OU right now, but ISU did beat them head to head and quite honestly, the whole Iowa State philosophy is built around beating OU. 3 linemen and everyone else covering bringing late blitzes, and then big TE’s matched up on the OU smurf like linebackers and receivers. ISU is a bad matchup for OU.

Second, I normally don’t care about the bowl too much if we win or lose, I try to enjoy it, but given what we are likely to have coming back next year it would be nice to win the bowl game. An impressive win would be key to a very very high ranking next year to start. At minimum ISU will be co-favorite to win the Big 12 next year and a dark horse playoff contender. ISU could be top 5 going into next year if we win the bowl game.

ESPN's updated projections. Obviously want the Cotton bowl, but A&M is the least appealing team we could play.

Have a kid who goes to our church who played in the Bahamas bowl. Talked with his mom, that one should be cancelled permanently.

Most of these predictions are not worth very much, although not quite as bad as most of the so-called bracketologists for the NCAA MBB tournament.

Here is the report of a little research I did in 2017 about the quality of predictions. Sorry, I haven't done it for the last two years, but I probably will do it again this year.

Dec 3, 2017
Have you ever wondered which of the guys predicting bowl assignments performed best? Well, I double-checked the picks of 6 prominent sports media guys.

Here are the results based on 1 point for picking one team in a bowl and 3 points for picking both teams (total correct picks in parenthesis with 78 possible). A perfect set of predictions would yield 117 points.

Jason Kirk (SB Nation). 58 points. Picked both teams for 14 bowls and one for 16 bowls (54 picks).

Erick Smith (USA Today). 55 points. Picked both teams for 12 bowls and one for 19 bowls (41 picks).

David Hale (ESPN). 53 points. Picked both teams for 11 bowls and one for 20 bowls (42 picks).

Kyle Bongura (ESPN). 45 points. Picked both teams for 10 bowls and one for 15 bowls (35 picks).

Jerry Palm (CBS). 42 points. Picked both teams for 9 bowls and one for 15 bowls (33 picks).

Eric Single (SI). 35 points. Picked both teams for 5 bowls and one for 20 bowls (30 picks).

Looks like I may have come up with a new game. Maybe next year, I will start a thread for a pool in which we can have a contest for our picks of bowl assignments.
