WILLIAMS: Three Up, Three Down from ISU’s dramatic win over Baylor

What he does have is a strong mind. He is able to forget his previous mistakes and go to the next play. That first half might have broken a lot of QBs where the coach would have had no choice but to replace him for the remainder of the game. Campbell knew that Purdy could come back from that atrocious first half.
I agree. What he may lack in the physical tools he makes up for it with his intangibles. The things I noted are things that he isn't bad at but if he was a little better at would transcend him from being good to great.

Throwing 3 picks in a half should result in sitting out a series to recollect. Granted, one of them was a 50/50 ball. We are extremely lucky to have won a game with 4 total turnovers, and 3 of them originated from the QB position.

That said, Purdy turned it around on his own. Second half was infinitely better.
Didn’t he have halftime to recollect?

I agree on the first pass. Took a shot. Safety made a good play. Scates could have helped him out and knocked it down, or made a better play on the ball.
I was at the game and didn't see a great replay, but the pass to Chase looked horrible. Way behind him. Even if he doesn't get his hand on it, it was probably picked off.
The pick six looked like a bad decision. DEnd was in his face and he tried to force the ball to Akers. That's a long throw from the far hash. These are the plays where he's trying to do too much. Just take the sack or throw the ball away.
You don’t want a turnover of any kind that early. A three and out is better. It messes with the mojo at that point.

I mean, he threw the third pick (pick six, actually) midway through the 2Q, then played at least one more series before half. So...kind of? There wasn't really a break there and the damage was already done.

Again, a win is a win at the end of the day, but that kind of game isn't a W against KSU, OKST, Texas, ...

Only if you let it. We couldn't have punted better than that field position, and if you're afraid of taking a shot it will be a long game. There's a never a good time for a turnover, so I'd say a first drive arm punt is as good as any.

I am for taking a shot, I thought it was at the wrong time. I would have declined the penalty, picked up the first down and on the next couple of series went deep with the right situation. The timing was not going to catch them off guard. A deep interception is like a punt, but not on first down.

"That game was utterly terrifying but in a fun, championship sort of way (if that makes sense)."

Loved this line. Very well said, in a weird and accurate sort of way, if that makes sense.

A deep interception without a return is fine. However, punt coverage is a lot different (or at least should be ;) ) than having a few receivers in routes all over the field. Even a deep interception can result in a big return.

That being said, a deep interception on third and very long isn't as painful as a deep interception on first and ten. On first and ten it is always painful.

Agreed. Although it was first and five. Why I would have declined the penalty and took second and one.

It’s been mentioned a couple times but after watching the replay, Scates did Purdy absolutely no favors on that play. Not a good throw by any means but at the very least Scates could have made a better effort to at least play defense on it. A lot of those plays are 50/50 but when your guy only gives 10...

Yeah, the DB gave him a good shove before the ball got there so he was in better position than Scates to make the catch, but he had time to fight back toward the ball and break it up. At that point take the OPI penalty, just don't give up the INT.

I mentioned after the replay to my kid next to me that had Scates put the brakes on when he noticed it was under thrown he would have gotten a PI, but he just slowed down and drifted out

It looked to me like Chase was knocked off his route at the line of scrimmage. I suppose pure X's and O's would have Chase exactly where Purdy threw it. Pick six = bad throw. Had he led him properly, it'd been a first down. Same as 'club' interception. Properly thrown it'd be a sure TD. All fixable.

Couldn't believe how many people on here were calling for Dekkers...
You have the all team, everything, leading qb, he had a rough half... but people want to pull him for a guy who's literally thrown 2 collegent passes in garbage time???
Welcome to to internet justice. It can be a b-itch!

I felt if Brock threw one more int MC would have to pull him. Not because I think Dekkers is better but it was just one of those games where the QB1 just didn't have it for whatever reason. I like Brock and think he's a good QB based on ISU standards but if you look at him objectively he's not so good that he can't be replaced.

What he has going for him is his leadership and moxie. He does have some savviness when the play breaks down but he also has shown to make poor decisions. He doesn't have particular strong arm and doesn't throw a good deep ball. He is above average accuracy wise but also leaves a lot yardage on the field with ball placement causing the receiver to adjust that results in the receiver to fall trying to catch the ball or getting tackled where a better ball would lead to bigger plays. He does have some wiggle and above average speed but isn't overly athletic. This may sound like I'm banging on Brock but just being objective.
I love Brock for what he has done, and is still doing. Yeah he had an iffy 1st half but your right, his leadership, savviness and determination led him and ISU to a much better 2nd half, thankfully!

Plus every QB is going to have one of those days (less than stellar). I think Brock will take this day and some of the other bad plays he has had, and continue to learn from it. I hope.

We as fans just need to remember the many good games he has had, and will continue to have. We are lucky to have him.

It was not Purdy's fault!

Consider this:
1 Black uniforms -- check
2 Black night game -- check
3 Practice all week in red/gold/white uniforms in daylight -- check
4 I am ready to pass - check
Where are my red/white uniforms - help
Maybe those are mine - nope
Who was that that caught it - oops
5 Find nearest trash bin and throw those ##&%@## black things away!!!

If the coach likes black so much.... When was the last time that Alabama, Oklahoma, Texas, USC, Minnesota, Arkansas, etc. played in black. HAVE PRIDE IN OUR COLORS!!!
