Love the last bit about Smart v Kane. I still remember DeAndre stepping over the flopping Marcus. Marcus starts to stand up, and gets called for the foul. Poetic justice. Also remember Cyclone Alley flopping in unison when Smart was introduced at the last game he played in Hilton. :D

And Fran's commentary: "That's a flop...and that's a foul." :D

Just a note for Rob, since you’re about my age.

I had a buddy I was in a lot of activities with in junior high and high school. After graduating in ‘79 though, the last time I saw him was at a wedding in ‘81 or so.

I took a circuitous route to Ames, and while I was on campus only bumped into one of my high school classmates—and that wasn’t Steve. However, about ten years ago we got in touch on Facebook. He was in California at the time, then retired to California. Recently he moved back to the Des Moines area, so after COVID-19 settles down, we’re hoping to get together. He’s never made it to a class reunion, so I haven’t seen Steve in over forty years.

The funny thing is, he and I were talking, and it turns out that we were both at the #10 Missouri upset in ‘83, the double overtime game where Barry Stevens scored 44. In my opinion, the very game where Hilton Magic was born, if not named as such.

And when we compared notes, it turned out that we were sitting within a few feet of one another. Steve must have been a couple rows in back of me, a few seats to the side over one shoulder or the other.

Small world.

Hard as it may be to believe, I ran across my program for that game jut last fall, when I was shifting some storage containers around. Didn’t know I still had it.

Anyway, thanks Rob, for your touches of Cyclone history!
