Thanks, @Farnsworth, for this idea!

What are your accidental muscle memory situation?

I'll let Farnsy share his, but try to come up with my own example.

I've been wearing glasses for probably the past 6 years or so. I probably needed them before that, but just didn't want to deal. Well, this past Monday, they upgraded me to bifocals. (Does "progressives" sound less old AF than "bifocals?") I'm not that old, my eyes' suckiness are just progressing pretty rapidly.

Before the bifocals, I kept having to lift up my glasses to read close-up stuff that wasn't on my phone or computer. I almost primarily read books on my phone/iPad rather than in physical form, so I hadn't really noticed I was doing this... until I got the bifocals. I keep lifting up my glasses to look at things and then realize that I don't need to.

What are your examples?

The cabinet in our kitchen where we keep the coffee mugs is right next to the cabinet above the microwave where we keep the liquor, it's not uncommon on any given morning for me to reach up and open the liquor cabinet before realizing it's 7:00 a.m. and I meant to get a coffee mug.

I may have a problem.

For years I had my own office, due to some remodeling, I had to share with two coworkers for about 8 months. They pointed something like this out to me that I never noticed. For whatever reason, when I after I type my log in info on my pc, I do this finger tap on my desk in front of my keyboard with my L middle and pointer finger, like dum, dum, dum, dum. I have no idea why or how long I've been doing this. It's like its part of the my typing rhythm or something. I've been back in my own office for about a year now and only notice once in awhile. I've never noticed myself doing it anywhere but at my work desk.

A few years back, I was put on a med for some acid refluxy type stuff, taking the pill was part of my morning routine for about 2 years but eventually with some diet and activity changes, I no longer had to take the med. During this time, I was also taking ambien for insomnia. There were two times during the first couple weeks of being off of the stomach med, that as part of my morning routine, I accidentally took the ambien. My mind couldn't get out of my poop, meds, brush teeth routine. Those were not my most productive days at work.

Despite not driving a stick shift for years, I almost always drive with my left hand on top of the steering wheel when cruising even though I am right handed.
...and periodically pat the center console with my right hand as if searching for a phantom limb. I miss it too.

To this day if I have one bag or book or whatever to carry it will be in my left hand so that my right hand is free to salute if a Marine officer pops out from somewhere.

Similar because an eye/vision thing.

Before I got reading glasses my left eye was slightly better at close vision than my right eye. I subconsciously was closing my right eye when reading something fine or very close. Over a couple years my eyes that were always the same correction were eventually different. In other words, a literal eye-muscle memory thing

This reminds me of the time my brother was driving an automatic after driving a manual for an extended time and slammed on the brakes while accelerating when it was time to shift.

My truck has the shift lever on the steering column. When I'm driving Wifey-poo's SUV I'm always reaching for the shift on the steering wheel instead of her center console area.

We had magnetic child locks on our kitchen cabinets for about 6 years. They had a magnet "key" to open the doors and drawers that we kept on the side of the microwave. The locks have been off for several months now and I still reach up there for the key almost every time I want to open a cabinet.

Same, I also don’t know how many times I’ve stepped on a clutch that isn’t there when I start a vehicle up.

Same here. Our cabinet above the coffee maker also has liquor bottles.

I think I pretty much do the same thing. Also when I come upon a quick braking scenario many times I use both feet looking for the imaginary clutch pedal.

You can't drink all day if you don't start in the morning.

My parents remodeled their house nearly 15 years ago (while I was living there after college) and switched which cupboard the glasses vs the plates/bowls are in. Every time I'm home I still go to the wrong cupboard.

Had a career as a driver's ed instructor.

As a passenger in any car, I'll push for that brake for a long time.
I do this even though I have never had a passenger brake. I guess I am used to being in the driver's seat most of the time. One of these days my foot is going to go through the floor board.
