I don't think Tre is going to be a true PG or a great facilitator for Iowa State. I envision he'll be good 3 and D guy off the bench who can provide great minutes.

Tre shouldn’t have gotten those minutes last year in a normal world. The fact that he did was a combInaction of bad roster construction and injuries. He should of been getting the spot minutes Grill was getting. I’m not really going to hold anything against him from what we saw last year. He showed he can be a quality shooter and hopefully he can develop his handles this offseason.
This virus came at the absolute worst time for this team. There were a lot of players who could of used a full summer of developing and now they have to do it on their own. Not to mention we will need at least two freshman to contribute at this rate as well. The whole team needed a full summer of workouts.

I don't want to limit Tre to just coming off the bench but if he could be Tyrus McGee 3 threat with the ability to play defense (already shown signs there) he'll be a top 7 rotation player all 4 years.
If he starts or not will depend on the construction of the roster. It is safe to say by the grad transfer targets they would like to have one more year of Jackson coming off the bench this year.
We can all reassess his Jr/Sr years if he can start of next summer.
Glad you could figure that out going off his Freshman year. There is no way he can improve before his Sr year.

Johnson was scout team PG by default this past season, that is why he was talked about.
As previously mentioned, Jackson will have to be exponentially improved with his playmaking in order to be a B12 quality PG next season and that is highly doubtful.
The team is best served with Bolton not being the lead facilitator on a couple of counts. It detracts from his scoring (which will be sorely needed) and it isn't a strength of his.
As a freshmen, it is highly doubtful Walker will be an immediate, effective PG and based on the highlight vids I've seen of him, there is little evidence to suggest otherwise.
If he somehow gets a waiver, I highly doubt Harris will suddenly morph into B12 quality PG after averaging less than 1 apg in 20 mpg last season at Memphis.
Prohm has recruited multiple transfer PGs this spring but has whiffed so far and I seriously doubt it has been a function of being confident in someone (including Coleman-Lands who played on the wing at Illinois and DePaul and Foreman who wasn't the primary facilitator at Stony Brook).

Also, I think you’re a little too dismissive of Johnson. He was considered a guard prospect back when Kane recruited him in high school. I don’t think it’s just a matter of him being scout team pg, although that’s encouraging in its self. A lot easier for a guy like Johnson to set up the offense against a forward.
Regarding NWB, there was some evidence that suggested he had the PG gene prior to 2017-18, more so than with Johnson after two seasons at Troy. As you suggest, one shouldn’t totally dismiss Johnson becoming a competent (or better) lead facilitator next season but I am not counting on it. As a result, landing an immediately eligible point guard/forward should still remain the highest priority.

It’s pretty similar- comments from Prohm, time running pg in practice on scout team, limited experience in actual games, but moments in which they flashed some signs.
Further, NWB was running pg, whereas Johnson likely would be a point forward. Positionally, Johnson may have an easier time at creating and facilitating offense.
Somebody said Nick was a PG in high school.
He played PG for the scout team his redshirt year.
He was just stuck behind Man-Man his sophomore year.
I wouldn't compare Tre to Tyrus, that is an unfair expectation. Tyrus made 96 three's at over 46%, many of which were high degree of difficulty. Tre won't be like Tyrus during his career, but that doesn't mean he won't be of value. I wish we would stop using the Tyrus McGee comparison completely.

I recall it being similar to Johnson. Babb played some pg in high school. Johnson was handling the ball for much of his high school time too. When Troy signed him there were comments made about him having the ball in PnR action. I imagine that’s why Kane, who recruited Johnson in high school, jumped at getting him.
It’s a stretch to say he was “just behind” Morris as a sophomore given he wasn’t used that way. Naz, Burton, and even Thomas did more secondary pg, plus the next season we tried DJ and Wigginton before NWB.
It is unusual for a redshirt Jr to become a pg, I’m hesitant to say Johnson can fill the hole. But like NWB, perhaps Johnson is another case in which the pg attributes were just under the surface and this staff recognizes them better than most? They didn’t become a pg as much as they finally got minutes to be a pg?
I’m just as optimistic about guys that have never had a chance to play a pg role, largely because of lineup construction, than guys that have had a chance to play it, but just weren’t very good at it.
Im not ready to sell Tre though (or Harris). He was just a freshman in a poorly constructed lineup. He reminds me of Custer in that he’s going to need to learn how to deal with his limitations at this level.

Tre seems to have a great attitude. He seems like a no nonsense kind of kid that will work hard to improve. With the experience gained last year, I think he can take a big leap this year. He is already our best on ball defender. I think his shooting and ball handling will both improve with the confidence that come with being a year older.
He was also playing quite a bit more out of control his sophomore year. He really improved.
Comparing apples to oranges. Tre as a freshman starter shot 37.5% from the 3 and the line was farther back than for Tyrus. McGee's 3-pt % as a JUNIOR was less than 40% and I'm guessing the percentage was much lower as a freshman. So a bit premature to say definitively "Tre won't be like Tyrus during his career."

It might be easier if a forward is guarding Johnson. With many teams playing small ball they can switch the 1-4 spots.
If Johnson becomes a weapon as point forward, then opponent coaches will switch a guard on to Johnson. So if Johnson is going to be a point forward, he better have a great handle.
In the little tape I saw of Johnson at Troy, I would compare his game to Tre Jackson last year vs. NWB or Niang.
