“I have heard from multiple sources” is pretty convincing :prohm:

That’d be interesting if true. Small has been with Prohm for a while now

A coach making a move like this says one of two things.

1. Coach needs some head coaching experience on his resume and is wiling to take a dip in salary to get that with the hope of more money and a better job in the future.

2. Coach knows or at least thinks that there is a high probability that the entire staff could be dismissed at the end of next season, and he wants to get ahead of it.

Could be either one.

Any changes with this staff would be welcome. Their player relations abilities are severely lacking and Small leaving would be an opportunity for improvement.

Small is a quality assistant, but with every loss there is an opportunity to get better. Or in this case, different! Let’s get a defensive specialist!

Even if its a paycut for him, its still an opportunity he should take. I hope he does well there if he does indeed take it.

Tough decision when that head coaching job is less than half what he makes as an assistant here.

Good Luck to Small if he does leave for a HC job.
I get the defensive specialist idea but, I'd prefer a well connected Midwest recruiter. That is one area Prohm hasn't really replaced since Otz left.

If there is no football revenue this fall then Prohm probably has 3-4 years at a minimum before Iowa State would in a financial position to do anything.

I would love to get an assistant with ties to the state of Michigan. That has been a good state to us for talent; need to get back into it.

#2 is the life of assistant coaches so that's not a big deal. You normally only have 1 or 2 year contracts. You can be let go at any given time. You're constantly moving around.

#1 it's a hell of a lot easier to take a 50% pay cut on paper than it is in reality. If you were going from coaching in an area with a ridiculously high cost of living to one with a low cost of living that's one thing but that certainly doesn't apply in this case.

Yep, because he appears to be a Prohm guy (following him)...recognizes if he follows Prohm to the next gig, would likely take similar pay cut...this way gets a head job for experience/opportunity

Also, if this goes through, Prohm could do a "hail mary" and hire Fizer to try to appease the fan base, create excitement, etc. I mean, CPR did it with Mangino, lol

I actually really like Small. He's a great guy. That being said I hope he takes it because a staff shakeup is needed
