WWE WrestleMania 36 Weekend Thread

Vice TV started their series Dark Side of the Ring and it started tonight with a 2 part episode about Benoit which also featured and discussed Eddie's passing as well.

Don't blame him, but that will be interesting if they don't announce the opponent and let it be a surprise.

This whole thing has been one big cluster****. I get them wanting the show to go on but sometimes you just have to say it's not worth the safety of your locker room. I don't get why you couldn't just postpone it. Raw and SD without fans is one thing. Your biggest ppv of the year without fans is another thing altogether.

This.

RAW and Smackdown have been painful to watch, I don't know exactly what else they can do, but what they are doing isn't working.

I'm guessing if there was certainty as to when they could have moved Mania to, they would have gone that route but it just kills you creatively and as a company in general when you don't know.

The positive is that they can be creative and try new things. Their plans to basically shoot a movie for the Wyatt-Cena match sound really intriguing. I have a hard time being critical in unprecedented times like this.

Also, it allows either SummerSlam or Survivor Series to be the big show this year which is kind of neat.

Yeah I'm good with it. It gives a chance for me and some friends to get together and I will enjoy watching it. As said above, no sense in delaying it when you don't know if it will be one month or six.

Here is what I am hearing and I have a friend who works at WWE corporate. He has nothing to do with the product seen on TV.

They are throwing around ideas that include rebranding one of the PPV

Wrestlingmania 2.0
Summerslam

That's all one name btw. So basically turning Summerslam into the big extravaganza PPV. Not sure if it will happen but that is what he has been hearing.

There's been good and bad which is pretty much how WWE always is. Taking the empty seats out and having hard cam face the stage were both great moves. Cena/Bray segment, Rollins/KO segment, and Edge and Orton's promos were crazy good for having no crowd to feed off.

I'm probably being too optimistic but I'm expecting Mania to be pretty good or at least memorable in a fairly positive way. I ***** about their product plenty but I'll give them credit. When the pressures on and their backs are against the wall, WWE usually delivers. The lack of a crowd and pre taping matches are negatives that could be used to their advantage. If they allow themselves to think way outside the box and really take some risks, they could put on a hell of a show or wind up with a ******** but at least it will be worth talking about either way. If they phone it in and just go through the motions, nobody will care.

A little off the rails, but if NASCAR can produce a digital race that looks real then have WWE or AEW(not needed) looked into some kind of a digital audience?

I think that would be overkill, as everyone knows they are going empty, or they are too dumb and would think they are putting people at risk.

Like someone else said above I think it's a good time to try something way off the wall. I don't have cable anymore so I can't comment on Raw/Smackdown lately, however I saw some AEW clips on YouTube in an empty arena and thought they did some interesting things while still address the lack of crowd. They were Jericho segments though and he can pretty much sell anything.

BTW, They used to start off saying Raw is the longest running episodic show, is it still, or did they miss one?

EDIT: I wouldn't mind if they piped in some fake crowd noise. We know they aren't there but I feel like you just expect to hear that in sports.

I don't think it was posted anywhere, but did anyone see the Dark Side of the Cage: Chris Benoit documentary? I thought it was really well done. I wonder why his daughter wasn't mentioned or participate.

Outside of the obvious main story, I was wondering what Chris's son was up to. Turns out he tried to wrestle for a Canadian promotion 2 years ago and Jericho called the promoter and told him he didn't have enough training and it would be dangerous, which is interesting cause he's a close family friend.

If you haven't seen it both parts are on Youtube on the Vice channel, really well done! Jericho led the production of it.

Listened to the Chris Van Vliet podcast with David Benoit a while back. He mentioned his sister and basically said she lives a normal life and just doesn’t want to be in the public eye at all. He also talked about how he wants to wrestle but he’s happy Jericho was looking out for him and shut it down because he definitely wasn’t ready. Between that and on the Vice documentary when David said Jericho and Chavo were the only people from WWE to reach out to him after the tragedy, Jericho went from a performer I really enjoy watching to a person I admire and respect. Dark Side of the Ring was a tough watch but totally worth it.
