Thad Matta - ISU Head Coach next year

This is laughable. Your argument is that staff doesn't matter much? That's absolutely insane. I'll also guarantee there's staff turnover this off season. You cannot have a season like this and keep things the same. It just doesn't happen.

What people should hope for is for Prohm to go the John Beilein route. After the 2016 season, Beilein's seat was getting very warm after two mediocre seasons (one of which because Caris Levert got hurt) and was facing pressure. He cleaned house and brought in Billy Donlon, who was supposedly there to help with the defense. DOnlon left after one year but then he brought in Luke Yachlich. It was Beilein seeing that simply having a top 10 offense wasn't going to get it done. There isn't a direct parallel here but the fact is that he turned around a program by recognizing they didn't have the right guys there for on the court coaching.
They just brought in a guy this past year... did it change anything?
How’s Yachlich doing at Texas? And like a said, there are guys out there but they are already on good teams and ISU doesn’t have the money to hire them away. also kind of silly bc Beliein was already one of the top coaches in the game and had been to multiple final fours before any staff shakeup.

Dana Altman.

1) Can develop talent.
2) Experienced, with success.
3) Won't tell recruits "You will start".
4) Not afraid to bench players that won't play defense
5) Knows that a good offense is not 1-on-1, then a 3.
6) No one would say "Look, he left the PAC-12 for us !!!"
Dana is not coming to Iowa State lol. He practically owns the PAC-12.

We went from 13-18 two years ago to 23-12 last year. I don't think it would be impossible to get to 17 wins next year.
I don't see the influx of talent coming in. Foster and Blackwell will be good, but we take a big hit with Haliburton leaving. Maybe we get a Shayok type grad transfer but I wouldn't bet on those odds given Prohms track record with transfers.

You mean like Shayok? Lol

Are you bad at reading?
No I just found it funny you were saying it'll be tough to land a guy like Shayok again, but Prohm literally did that two years ago. He also got Bolton here which was a good addition.

Yeah, one guy. Yachlich is doing about what UT had been doing since theyve been a good defensive team for years. There wasn't going to be that stark improvement.

Are you also making the argument that the best strategists are already in the game and can't be found at a lower level? That seems unlikely. Yaklich, for example, was at Illinois State. If Prohm is going to show progress next year, 90% will rely on a functional defense which there is almost zero proof he or anyone on this staff can accomplish. He needs to go out and find someone who can run the defensive end at practice while Prohm and whoever else work on the offensive end. If he doesn't do that, he will fail. He may try that and fail but at the end of the day the argument that assistants can't make a dramatic impact, especially just at one end of the floor, is ridiculously wrong. You go out and you start looking at teams that are good defensively and you figure out why. Why is is Rhode Island a pretty good defensive team? Looks like probably their head coach is in his second year. Ok, who's next? Ball St. Now, Jame Whitford has been there awhile. Why is his defense all of a sudden much better? What a second, Ben Botts and Matt Crenshaw have been there for two years which coincides with this defensive improvement. Taking a quick look, it looks like there's a chance Botts, with a fairly strong resume for how young he is could have something to do with this. Let me call John Doe, who I know in that conference and see what he knows. I have a computer and a kenpom subscription. Prohm has contacts and he should be able to flesh out who can help him. That's a large part of his job. He like recruiting and he's fine at coaching offense. Throw a bunch of resources at what you don't know.

And his transfers also have included,

Jordan Ashton
Ray Kosongo
Merril Holden
Darrell Bowie
Hans Braase
Jeff Beverly
Zoran Talley
Michael Jacobson
Prentiss Nixon

He doesn't have a good track record with transfers no matter how you want to spin it.

The staff seems unable to teach defense, rebounding, and interior skills to the players, or just doesn't understand that these things are problems beyond giving lip service to them in press conferences. However, I won't be surprised if there are no staff
changes, because these problems have been apparent for a couple of years now, and nothing has been done.

If Steve wants to stay in Ames he knows that he has to produce next year or he's likely gone. My guess is one bench coach retires and he brings in a guy who's middle name is "Boxout".

grill isn’t a transfer and it seems very short sided to say he’s a failure. I also wouldn’t say Jacobson was an overall failure.
