The clip of Purdy's pick six really explains a lot about this offense IMO.
And like Jay said, it's happened several times, including in the Alamo Bowl. I don't know if Purdy is taught to just turn and throw it immediately on that play or not, but it sure seems like it. And if that's the case, then like Jay says, that play needs to be thrown out for good.
And what makes it worse, is that Purdy's other two options on that play were WIDE open. Jones clears in the middle, and Breece is wide open for a 10+ yd gain in the opposite flat.
So we had 3 options on that play, and 2 were wide open for big gains, but instead Purdy just takes the snap, and automatically turns and throws to the option that is completely blanketed. That just cannot happen.
And probably even worse than all of that is the fact it was 2nd and 4 deep in our own territory, so we should never have even called a passing play at all. I would imagine Manning got torn into after this game by CMC, or at least he should have. But CMC also needs to realize during the game that we aren't being balanced at all, and needs to step in too.
The more I step back and think about this game, the more I think we just handed OSU the game. Why in the world would you try to get in a track meet with OSU. That plays right into their hands. We also had horrible game plans against UNI and Iowa as well this year. I feel for this team because I don't feel like they are always put in the best positions to win. We are better than our record indicates IMO.

A good read...but a rather disheartening one. I feel that I've read this before over the past 2.5 years...the defense makes adjustments, but the offense can't get it figured out and struggles the whole game.
It seems over the past couple of seasons that the BIg 12 is begging for a couple of teams to step up and establish themselves in the upper tier, but ISU just can't do it because of inconsistent, struggling offense. It would be further disheartening to see a team that was 1-11 two years ago make that jump...I guess we will see how it plays out.
The INT was 3rd and 4, but we threw it on 2nd and 4 too for an incompletion so your point is still valid.
This is confirmed by the 3rd down marker in the gif of the article.
And they went with a play that has had little success, vs. hitting, say, a TE for 5 yards since it had been there all game.
And the possession started with 7:30ish on the clock with a tied score so it wasn't exactly 'hurry up' time.
As a matter of fact, chipping away and getting a TD with very little time would have been optimal.
CMC said after the game that the amount of passes we threw were a bit skewed by our last several possessions when we were behind and were throwing more to come back. That irritated the hell out of me.... it just wasn't the case at all.
I know CMC was just trying to defend his OC a bit and not throw him under the bus, but we were NEVER forced into having to throw the ball in that game at any point.

Purdy was backpedaling without actual pressure. He’s very good, but his feet are often of that of a sophomore.I still have nightmares of Purdy backpedaling and throwing off his back foot all game long last week. Not much good is ever going to come out of that.
If he's getting pressure up the middle like that, he needs to roll out to one side or the other immediately, and look for an open WR, but if nothing is there, just take off. But the absolute worst thing you can do is backpedal when there's pressure coming up the middle right in your face.

It is, and we're close to turning that corner.Taking the next step is hard. I'm surprised that so many people can't see that.
