I will never understand why Panchero's closed. That place was a gold mine!

It is hard to believe that they had to change the name after all those years. Anyone know the real story?
The story I heard was that some ISU students were driving through Oklahoma on their way to spring break and found another "Flying Burrito". They told the worker (who happened to be the owner) "Hey did you know there is another Flying Burrito in Ames, Iowa?". That Oklahoma "Flying Burrito" held the naming rights and sent notice to the Ames one to change the name or they would be sued. Way to go students.

You can read the case yourself

Where were Marble Slab and Spaceport? I know they were in that area. And Thumbs Up used to be right around there too in the 80s.

I only went to the one in Ankeny that seemed to last a few short months. We only went once, was not impressed. Must have to be drunk.

Space Port and Marble Slab were next door (111). Marble Slab opened in '85, and I believe Space Port was in there prior.

Thumbs Up was at 113 (where Subway is now).

I never went to the Welch location, but it must have gone way downhill judging by all these comments. The Lincoln Way location made some awesome food when I was in school (05-09).

what I remember about going there with buddies around 11-12 pm was always 5-6 employees on staff with us being the only ones in there. it was the same at the Ankeny location anytime I went there when that existed.

I wish DaVinci's would take over the Flying Burrito place. Or any place in Campustown. I miss that sumbitch. A Jack in the Box would do amazing in that area too.

This is correct. The El Gordo burrito was an absolute treasure! Panchero's is a shell of what it used to be and it still blows the doors off the likes of Fighting Burrito, Qdoba, & Chipotle.

In Madison, WI and Sprongfield, IL and Indianapolis there is LaBamba Burrito. Their menu and food are nearly identical to the "Old" Pancheros. Lunch hour and Sundays the place is packed with Latinos. Sundays they serve menudo. It is a must stop for me.
