Tamin Lipsey recruiting thread

As I’ve said before this most likely won’t be a good test case for ISU v Hoiberg recruiting battles if Lipsey continues to blow up as predicted. The real test is going to be when that next Peter Jok or Jared Uthoff comes around. Whenever that may be. a high 3 star low 4 star that is definitely a P5 player but not a 5 star top 20 kid.

Hokfan at work was salivating over the fact that kNU is recruiting Lipsey & how Cyclone fans are now starting to hate Hoiberg. I told him basically what Jansma said in an earlier post. He seemed disappointed that I wasn't jumping on the "hate Hoiberg" train. I hate kNU, wasn't thrilled with Hoiberg's move to kNU, but I will ALWAYS be thankful for what he did for ISU basketball when he was a player, and resurrecting our McDormant program as a coach. I watched FOUR Hoiberg recruits combine to score 51 points last night in the frikin' NBA (the highest level of Basketball in the WORLD) & loved every minute of it - a fact that I reminded ignorant Hokfan at work today. I was just about to ask him if he had a chance to obtain financial advice from Morgan-Stanley (supposedly, that's where former Hok players go when they get done with college) but he changed the subject pretty quickly.
A hawk fan bringing up something to an Iowa State fan thinking it will spark anger or annoyance only to change the subject when the tables are turned? I don't believe you...

If Lipsey is as good as we are speculating...

...Nebraska is going to be the least of our worries.

Get your point but many top notch players want to just go and play for a guy who knows all about the NBA & Fred pretty much has that covered from all angles. I’ll just keep dreaming that Tamin wants to be a Cyclone & the new mayor of AMES!

Ole Roy, Coach K, Cal, and Slimy Self (or whoever KU has at that point) are going to be able to say everything a young man needs to hear about the NBA, unfortunately.

For what it’s worth I spoke with some Ames wrestlers at districts this year and asked a couple of them where Tamin was going to school. They both said ISU because he really appreciated Prohm being the 1st to offer him. It meant a lot to him.

Have no doubt whatsoever it really did (does). But that is before.....well, ya know. Hope we still have a good chance, tho.

I'm laughing because wrestlers gave you that information on a basketball player.
I had a son with zero connections to wrestling know where a nationally recruited wrestler was going before most everyone else.....because they went to the same school. I'd discount the ISU prediction because the kid has years to change his mind, but not because it came from classmates who happen to wrestle.

Every true freshman of the Hoiberg regime...

Palo = Iowa (originally a walk-on, though)
Godfrey = Minnesota
Railey = Oregon
Ejim = New Hampshire (at least for prep)
---
Gibson = Michigan
Sledge = New York
---
Niang = Massachusetts
Mitrou-Long = Nevada (at least for prep)
Okoro = New York
Dorsey-Walker = Michigan
---
Thomas = Wisconsin
Morris = Michigan
---
Custer = Kansas
Tsalmpouris = Greece

So it looks like Bubu was the only high school guy that Fred got out of Iowa.

Does he even count as a walk-on? I thought went on scholarship at some point.

That's a lot of kids that didn't pan out. I thought Fred never missed on a recruit unless they were paid to go to another school:rolleyes:.

There are some great one there (5 by my count ) fair share of misses also.

Wow! So basically, he's not coaching at college after this stop, but NBA is very much on the table. Keep an eye out for a Minnesota Timberwolves opening or Indiana Pacers opening in 2021 and he's gone.

I know it’s the group think here, which is why so many of them loved Iowa wrestling when gable was there, and now root for penn st because of Cael.

But Fred was terrible with the bulls. He has serious rehab to do. He may be able to parlay a friendship into another job, someday. But that’s a ways in future.

Fred will be back in the NBA by the time this kid actually gets to college

I think one of three things happen.

(1.) I agree with @Cat Stevens for once on this one. Fred has some major resuscitation of his coaching reputation to do after failing badly in Chicago and the, "I ******* hated recruiting" incident. Nationally, he is a nice guy, but maybe too nice, who had a good run at Iowa State, but one Prohm has continued without too much trouble and was awful with the Chicago Bulls. So say Fred comes into Nebraska, has success (on par with his run in Ames)... Then he is off to another NBA job for proving it once again in college in short order.

Example -- Fred Hoiberg at Iowa State

(2.) Fred is meh. He was innovative in 2010 with the pace-and-space offense and transfer recruiting, but the game has caught up with him. He has even less success attracting high school talent to Lincoln than he had to Ames, where he was hit-or-miss but had at least some really good ones. The Nebraska program maybe sneaks into the NCAA tournament but is no threat to anybody, and elite recruits like Lipsey are never interested. Fred might be in Lincoln a good while, or at least until Nebraska wants to try again on basketball.

Example -- Tim Miles

(3.) The game really passed him by and his lack of effort at recruiting/the comparative difficulty of the transfer market means Fred never gets anything of note going. The general sleaziness of you-know-who and failed recruiting contribute to the breakdown greatly.

Example -- Chris Mullin

I would think if Lipsey improves as one would think, LOTS of offers will roll in and unless it's about Fred, I wouldn't be as worried (as we also know Prohm has a good guard reputation).

Interesting thing....Lipsey's AAU coach is Lefty Moore. Remember...the one Fred brought on to staff...but then had to let go because he made contact with Peter Jok at an AAU tourney? Not sure how close they are, but certainly if Lefty is pals with Fred, could be an influence.

But, again, I would hope that hometown/ISU guard play outweighs playing for Fred in NB.
I could be wrong but I think Lefty Moore is more of an ISU guy than a Fred guy.

Reading this thread makes me realize that people thought he wouldn’t offer. Why wouldn’t he?

Tomorrow morning I’ll read angry posts about the rising sun.
Indeed. Lipsey's high school gym has Hoiberg's picture "hanging in the rafters". Fred's not doing his job very well at all if he doesn't try to use that connection.

I think half the posters in this thread just took down the pictures of Hoiberg they had hanging above their beds.
